MEADVILLE, Pa.—The Allegheny College volleyball team had their senior day spoiled by North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) foe Denison University Saturday (Oct. 13).
The Big Red picked up the win in straight sets (25-20, 25-14, 25-16).
Before the match, the Gators honored their senior student assistant Rob Stiefvater and players
Rachel Slotterback and
Meghan Uht.
Denison gained an early lead in the opening set, 9-5. The Gators fought back, tying the game at nine on the heels of a 4-0 run. After trading leads, the Big Red utilized a 4-0 run of their own to gain an 18-14 lead. Three straight points from the Gators brought it within one point. However, the Big Red closed out the set on a 7-3 run, winning it 25-20.
Similar to the opening set, the Big Red jumped out to a 7-2 lead. The Gators brought the set within three points, 11-8, before the Big Red started to pull away on a 6-0 run. Leading 22-14, the Big Red won the ensuing three points to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The two teams were even early in the third set. Tied at seven, the Big Red went on a 4-1 run to gain an 11-8 lead. That advantage grew to 14-9 before a Gator timeout. Following the timeout, the Gators went on a 4-1 run to pull within two points, 15-13. However, the Big Red rattled off a 6-1 run to gain a 21-15 lead. Up 22-16, the Big Red won the final three points to seal the conference win.
Grace Lengauer led the Gators with 11 kills. Uht,
Elizabeth Debich and
Rebecca MacQuarrie had four kills apiece.
Raelynn Dorscheid and
Eden Merkle served aces.
Olivia D'Andrea had 16 assists.
Defensively, Slotterback led the way with 20 digs. Lengauer was also in double figures with 12 digs.
Kaila Kasper and Isabella Pivec led the Big red with 12 kills apiece.
The Gators return to action Tuesday (Oct. 16) as they travel to Hiram College for a midweek NCAC contest.
