Gators Drop Defensive Battle at DePauw

GREENCASTLE, Ind. – Host DePauw scored midway through the first half, and Allegheny was unable to recover, falling 1-0 to the Tigers in a North Coast Athletic Conference matchup.

In a defensive struggle in which the two teams combined for just 13 shots, DePauw's (4-8-1, 2-2 NCAC) Alex Berkley's unassisted tally in the 26th minute proved to be the game-winner, as the Gators (6-8, 1-3 NCAC) dropped their second straight.

DePauw had the better of the play early on, as Allegheny keeper Maya Hackman made a pair of saves in the first four minutes to keep the game deadlocked.

The Gators' first shot of the day came in the sixth minute, but Shannon McGuinn's effort went high. Allegheny would maintain possession for most of the next several minutes, receiving three corner kicks between the eighth and 20th minutes, but was unable to score the game's first goal.

With just under 20 minutes left in the half, DePauw was granted its first corner kick, and the Tigers took advantage, with Berkley scoring off of the set piece to put her squad in front 1-0.

The defensive theme would then continue for the duration of the half, with DePauw managing the only other shot of the frame, which was saved by Hackman in the 35th minute.

Less than a minute into the second half, DePauw looked primed to add to its lead, but Bailey Ehrens' penalty kick went wide.

After the PK, Allegheny looked to go on the attack. Following a corner kick in the 50th minute, Alex Klare's shot in close was blocked, with McGuinn's attempt off the rebound saved by DePauw keeper Mia Manney. Two minutes later, Manney turned aside a shot from Emily Orr to keep the Gators off the board.

The defenses would again tighten up, as after Orr's attempt, neither team was credited with a shot for the next 25 minutes, when Allegheny's Isabella Martinez's attempt went high with 13:11 left to play.

With 6:37 left, Bryanna Urso's shot from distance was saved by Malley, and it proved to be the final scoring chance for either team,  as DePauw would keep the Gators at bay to close out the win.

Both keepers were credited with three saves for the game, while the Gators ended the afternoon with a 7-6 advantage in shots, including a 5-2 margin in the second half.

The Gators will look to return to winning ways on Tue. Oct. 16, when they welcome NCAC foe Oberlin to Frank B. Fuhrer Field for a 7:30 p.m. bout.
