Gators Fall in Four Set Thriller to Wooster

MEADVILLE, Pa.—The Allegheny College volleyball team fought hard, but ultimately fell to the College of Wooster in four sets in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play Wednesday (Oct. 10).

The Fighting Scots won the sets 25-15, 25-22, 18-25 and 25-23.

After back-and-forth play to open the match, Wooster took a 9-4 lead.  After a Gator timeout, the Fighting Scots continued to control the momentum as their lead grew to 18-6.  Following the second timeout from the Gators, the Fighting Scots closed out the set, 25-15.

Wooster took a 4-0 lead in the second set before a 4-0 Gator run tied the game.  After trading a couple series of points, Wooster went on a 9-0 run to pull ahead, 18-8.  Trailing late in the set, the Gators mounted a comeback.  Taking advantage of Wooster errors, the Gators dropped the lead to 24-22.  However, the Fighting Scots picked up a kill to take the set 25-22.

The momentum generated by the Gators late in the second set carried over to the third, as they led early on.  Wooster tied the game up as back-and-forth play followed until Wooster gained a 16-14 lead.  Following a timeout, the Gators went on their best run of the night, winning seven straight points to gain a 21-16 lead.  Leading 22-18, a Grace Lengauer kill, followed by a Rachel Slotterback ace set up a set point for the Gators.  The Gators won that point on an attack error to force a fourth set.

Wooster jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the fourth set.  The Gators regained their footing after a timeout, tying the set up at 11 all.  Wooster then gained a small 16-13 lead, but a 4-1 run tied the set at 17.  The teams continued to exchange points until the Fighting Scots gained a 22-20 lead.  After an Alysha Crowther kill brought the game within one, a pair of points gave Wooster the match point.  The Gators staved off two match points with kills from Crowther and Tamara Babic, but a kill secured the conference win for the Fighting Scots.

Lengauer led the Gators' offense with 15 kills.  Crowther also finished in double digits with 11.  Babic and MacQuarrie had four apiece while A'Jhana Dicko and Meghan Uht had three each.  Olivia D'Andrea had 23 assists while Raelynn Dorscheid had 11.  Slotterback served up three aces while Dorscheid had two.

Slotterback also led the Gator backline with 29 digs.  Lengauer had 16 while Tyler Besch had 12.  Dicko had three blocks while Crowther and Lengauer had two apiece.

The Gators are back in action Saturday (Oct. 13) as they host Denison University at 1 p.m.
