Allegheny Edged by Grove City in Overtime

GROVE CITY, Pa.—The Allegheny College men's soccer fell in overtime, 2-1, at Grove City College Saturday (Sept. 9).

The Gators got on the board early on.  After pressuring the Wolverines with Bryce Evans shot and a corner kick, Tolossa Hassan broke off down the right side and beat the keeper to the inside left post.  The goal, scored in the ninth minute, marked his third of the year.

The offense continued to pressure with shots from Evans and Hassan but the Wolverines where able to find the equalizer on a shot from Nate Curry in the 25th minute.

In the closing minutes of the half, Ian Chick had a pair of shots but the score remained tied at the half.

The Wolverine offense put pressure on the Gators in the early moments of the second half but the defense was able to hold tight.

In the final 10 minutes of regulation, Laim McKersie and Tolossa Hassan both had shots blocked, and Danny Reid had a shot go high, sending the teams into overtime.

The Wolverines had the first scoring chance in the extra session but the shot went high.  In the 93rd minute, Izaak Miller put a header on net off an Evans corner kick, but the Wolverines made a defensive save.  Two minutes later, the Wolverines Jonathan Burton scored on a chip shot from 25 yards out to win the game for the Wolverines.

Haasan had his one goal on three shots.  Jorge Olan, Reid, Miller and McKersie had two shots each.

Overall, the Gators outshot the Wolverines 16-14, but Grove City had a 5-3 advantage on corner kicks.

"It was a tough loss for us to swallow, a good effort by both teams in a high-level match," remarked Gator Head Coach Angelo Panzetta.  "We need to sharpen things up and make sure we are paying attention to all the little details you need to execute in order to get a hard-fought result on the road.  My staff and I will make sure we get there as we will learn from this and use it as motivation moving forward."

The Gators are back in action Tuesday (Sept. 12) at Baldwin Wallace University.
