Late Heroics Lift Gators Over Yellow Jackets

BEREA, Ohio— Tied at 2-2 in the final ten seconds of regulation, Danny Reid set up Jorge Olan for the game-winner as the Allegheny College men's soccer team defeated Baldwin Wallace University on the road Tuesday (Sept. 12).

All three Gator goals came in the second half.

Tolossa Hassan had the first shot of the game in the second minute but was blocked on its way to the net.  Five minutes later, the Yellow Jackets got on the board as Joey Geither scored on an assist from Danny Ruple.

After the Yellow Jacket goal, the Gators put pressure on the Baldwin Wallace defense as they recorded three shots and three corner kicks over a three-minute stretch but were unable to find the back of the net.

In the closing minutes of the half, Jon Sion nearly tied the game with a header but it went wide as the Yellow Jackets took the 1-0 lead into the locker room.

In the opening minute of the second half, Eddie Opalka just missed an equalizer wide.  Ian Chick earned an opportunity in the 51st minute but the shot was saved as the Yellow Jackets protected their lead.

The Gators offense continued to earn opportunities and eventually converted in the 60th minute.  After creating a turnover near midfield, they worked it into the corner where Adam Mascio crossed it in front of the net to Chick, who snuck it past the keeper in the bottom 90 for his first goal of the season.

In the 65th minute, the Yellow Jackets nearly regained the lead on a header by Geither but Cory Wiard got in front of it to keep the game tied.  Eight minutes later, Hassan earned a shot inside the box off a well-placed pass but Ryan Asbury made the save.

In the 79th minute, Hassan and Evans worked the ball deep into Baldwin Wallace territory, where Evans was able to beat his defender 1v1 and chip it over the goalie to give the Gators a 2-1 lead.

Just a minute later, the Yellow Jackets found the equalizer as Michael Snowball scored on a header assisted by Cannon Dees.

The game remained tied heading into the final minute of play.  The Yellow Jackets earned a free kick but the Gator defense cleared the ball, setting up a counter attack.  Hassan corralled the ball around midfield and sent it down to Reid, who found Olan right in front of the net with five seconds left to give the Gators the nonconference win.

Olan, Chick and Evans scored the Gator goals while Reid and Mascio earned assists. Wiard earned the win in net in his first career start, making six saves.

"We did a lot of good things in the first half, and thought we out-possessed them, but just couldn't score," said Allegheny head coach Angelo Panzetta. "For the second half, we talked about trying to pressure more to wear them out.  With it being our third game in five days, we subbed a lot to try and keep up the pace and pressure, and it paid off in the 89th minute."

The Gators return to the road Saturday (Sept. 16) at Penn State-Behrend, with gametime alted for 7 p.m.
