BRADFORD, Pa. -
Tolossa Hassan's second goal of the season proved to be all that the Gators would need in their 1-0 victory at Pitt-Bradford.
Allegheny (2-1) out-shot the Panthers (0-4) a staggering 27-5, including 17 attempts in the second half, but Hassan's tally in the 13th minute was the only one that got by Pitt-Bradford keeper Derrick Brock, who kept his team in the match by turning in 13 saves.
"We did a lot of good things today," said Gator head coach
Angelo Panzetta. Â "Between the 18's, it was positive. Â Any time you generate 27 shots in a match, it's a good thing. Â We do need to be sharper in the final third, as we had plenty of chances to get that second goal."
The hosts received the bulk of their scoring chances early, tallying three shots and one corner kick in the first nine minutes of play. Â They were unable to cash in on the early momentum, however, as two of the shots were blocked and the third went wide, while the corner kick was thwarted. Â
After a Panther foul in the 11th minute, the Gators maintained possession for a long stretch, ending with Hassan's strike to take a 1-0 lead just under 13 minutes into play.
The Gator offense would continue its pressure, getting five more shots and four corner kicks in the 10 minutes following Hassan's tally. At the 20-minute mark, a header from
Bryce Evans was denied by Brock and led to a corner, but the Gators couldn't cash in. Â Nine minutes later, another Brock save on Hassan led to the Gators' sixth corner of the half, but it was also fruitless, and the lead remained at one. Â
Play would even out in the latter stages of the opening half, with Allegheny keeper
David Stekla turning in his first save of the match with seven minutes left in the half.  Allegheny looked to add to its lead in the final three minutes, but shots from
Dillon Thoma and Jon Scion were each denied by Brock, and the score would remain 1-0 at the intermission.Â
Over the opening 45 minutes, the Gators held a 10-4 edge in shots, and a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks. Â Brock ended the half with six saves.
The Gators continued to mount pressure in the opening minutes of the second half, and looked primed to add on to the lead. Â Between the 45th and 58th minutes, Allegheny out-shot the Panthers 5-1, while taking two corner kicks, but to no avail, as Brock turned in three more saves over the span.
Allegheny's next big scoring chance came in the 70th minute. A shot from Evans was blocked out of bounds, and he then found
Jorge Olan inside the box on the subsequent corner kick.  Brock stopped Olan's attempt up close, but the Gators kept the ball in the Bradford third of the field.  Two minutes later, a shot from
Izaak Miller was saved, with the rebound coming to
Kristian Snyder, who missed an insurance goal by inches when his attempt blasted off the crossbar.
The Gators' final flurry came in the 84th minute, but a shot from
Danny Reid was blocked, before Miller hit another post with a blast.
Allegheny owned a 17-1 margin in shots and took seven of the eight corner kicks in the second half, with Brock making seven more saves. Nine different players had at least one shot for Allegheny, led by five from Hassan, and four apiece from Sion and Snyder. Â Stekla needed to make just one save in order to earn his second shutout win of the season.Â
The Gators now face a quick turnaround, returning to action on Saturday afternoon when they make the short trek south to Grove City College for a 3 p.m. tilt.
