OBERLIN, Ohio—A big first half lifted Oberlin College to a 14-3 win over the Allegheny College women's lacrosse team in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play Tuesday (April 11).
The Yeowomen controlled the game early on as they limited the offensive chances of the Gators while scoring four goals in the opening ten minutes. Following a
Kaelin Clogan save, the Gators cleared the ball and called timeout in an effort to halt the momentum.
After the timeout, the Yeowomen added two more goals. At that point, pace slowed down as neither team found the back of the net the next five minutes. The Gators earned chances to get on the scoreboard but were unable to find the back of the net. A Yeowomen goal with just under ten minutes to play broke up the scoreless stretch as they increased their lead to 8-0. That goal proved to be the final one of the half as Oberlin led heading into the locker room.
Oberlin scored the first two goals of the second half to push their lead to 10-0. Nine minutes into the half, the Gators cracked the scoreboard as
Alexa Maloney scored on an assist from
Shelby Piper, cutting the lead to 10-1. The Yeowomen responded by netting two more goals to push the lead to 10 once again.
Midway through the half, Alex Zielinksi caused a turnover which led to Piper earning a free position shot. Piper buried the shot in the back of the net to bring the game to 12-2.
Down the stretch, the Yeowomen added two more goals. With 90 seconds to play, Piper scored an unassisted goal.
Piper finished the game with two goals and an assist. Maloney also scored for the Gators.
Jessie Thiessen led the Gators defense with six draw controls, four groundballs and two caused turnovers.
Laurence Busque also had four groundballs and a pair of caused turnovers. Zielinski led the Gators with three cased turnovers while collecting two groundballs.
Clogan finished the game with six saves.
The Gators return home Saturday (April 15) to host DePauw University in NCAC action.
