MEADVILLE, Pa.—The Allegheny College softball fell in a doubleheader to Wittenberg University Saturday (April 1) on Senior Day to open North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play.
Prior to game one, the Gators honored its five seniors:
Kaitlyn Campbell,
Abrianna Sadler,
Allison Cabo,
Taylor Massart and
Miranda Arison.
The Tigers won game one 14-0 and game two 11-0.
GAME ONE
The Tigers took advantage of a leadoff walk in the first inning as they plated the first run of the game. In the bottom of the frame with two outs,
Jessica Zavolta hit a single through the left side but the Gators were unable to take advantage.
The game turned into a pitching battle over the next couple innings. Arison did not allow a hit until the third inning.
The Tigers took over the game in the top of the fourth as they sent five across the plate.
Zavolta reached first on an error in the fourth with one out. After
Jessica Valerino reached on a fielder's choice, Sadler singled through the left side to put Valerino in scoring position. However, the Tigers recorded the third out before the Gators were able to bring the runner across home.
After keeping the Gators off the board in the bottom of the fourth, the Tigers offense momentum carried over the fifth as they added eight more runs.
Rachel Ramsey got on the base for the Gators in the fifth but they were unable to make up the runs as they fell in five innings.
Zavolta and Sadler provided the hits for the Gators.
GAME TWO
After Zavolta earned a walk with two outs in the first, Valerino doubled to left center, moving Zavolta to third. However, the Tigers recorded a strikeout to get out of the inning.
Massart led off the second with a double that hit the right center fence. After a groundout, Campbell was hit by a pitch to runners at first and second. With two outs,
Paige Blinkiewicz singled up the middle but Massart was called out at home for the third out.
After getting out of the jam in the second, the Tigers put three runs up in the third to take the lead. The Tigers continued to bat well in the fourth, scoring four more runs.
In the fifth, the Tigers added four more and kept the Gators off the scoreboard to secure the win.
Valerino and Massart had doubles to lead the Gators. Blinkiewicz also had a hit.
The Gators are back in action Sunday (April 2) at home against Westminster College in nonconference play.
