CLERMONT, Fla.—The Allegheny College softball team fell in a pair of games at the 2017 Spring Games in Clermont, Fla. Thursday (March 23).
The Gators were defeated by the University of St. Thomas 11-0 in game one and by Lawrence University 9-1 in game two.
GAME ONE
Paige Blinkiewicz led off the game with a single down the right field line. She then moved to second when
Jessica Zavolta earned a walk.
Jessica Valerino moved Blinkiewicz on a fielder's choice but the Tommies forced a fly out to end the inning.
In the bottom of the first, the Tommies put up four runs to take the lead.
In the second, the Tommies threatened to score with runners at first and second with two outs but the Gators ended the inning by forcing a groundout.
Blinkiewicz tallied her second hit of the game to lead off the third. She stole second with two outs but was unable to come across the plate to keep the score at 4-0.
In the bottom of the frame, the Tommies tacked on six more runs to grow their lead to ten.
St. Thomas added one more run in the fourth as they secured the win.
GAME TWO
After threatening in the first,
Taylor Massart led off the second with a single to left center. After advancing to second on a wild pitch, she took third on a
Rachel Ramsey groundout.
Kaitlyn Campbell then brought her home to give the Gators a 1-0 lead.
The Vikings responded in the bottom of the inning as they jumped ahead by plating six runs.
The Gators threatened again in the third inning. With one out,
Jessica Gordon singled down the left field line. Zavolta was then hit by a pitch, putting Gordon in scoring position. However, the Vikings recorded outs on the next batters to get out of the jam.
The Vikings would tack on two runs in the third and one in the fourth to take a 9-1 lead into the fifth inning.
Maria DiDonato reached base safely to lead off the fifth inning. Blinkiewicz then earned a walk to give the Gators runners at first and second with no outs. Once again, the Vikings were able to get out of the jam without allowing the Gators across the plate to seal the win.
Massart and Gordon recorded hits for the Gators. Campbell tallied a RBI.
The Gators conclude their Florida trip Friday (March 23) with games against the University of Southern Maine and St. Lawrence University.
