Late Comeback Falls Short as Pipers Top Gators

TUCSON, Ariz. - Despite another late-game rally, the Allegheny baseball team was unable to overcome a large early deficit, falling 13-10 to Hamline at the Kino Sports Complex.

Hamline (6-7) erupted for four runs in the fourth inning and six in the fifth to take a 10-0 lead, only to see Allegheny (6-4) twice cut the deficit to two in the late innings.  The Pipers, however, added insurance runs in the eighth and ninth to thwart the comeback and earn their second win over the Gators on the week.

Despite the loss, the Gator offense continued to put up big numbers, as they scored at least 10 runs for the fifth time in the last six games, while they pounded out a total of 15 hits.  Six different players posted multi-hit games for the Gators, led by Brandon Pouch, who finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a pair of runs scored.  Robert DiMaggio, Austin Bristol, Tyler Wagner, Ethan Pawlak, and Vincent Carone each had two hits apiece, with DiMaggio smacking his first home run of the season.

Patrick Orr started on the mound and took the loss for Allegheny, working 3 2/3 innings and allowing four runs on six hits with two strikeouts.  A total of six pitchers were used by Allegheny, with Nick DiBucci turning in the strongest performance, working four innings and allowing one earned run on three hits with five K's.

The game was scoreless for the first three innings, before Hamline scored four runs on four hits and a walk in the top of the fourth to take a 4-0 lead.  The Pipers added on in a big way in the next frame, sending 13 men to the plate and scoring six runs on six hits before DiBucci came out of the pen to strike out the final two batters.

The Gators began their comeback attempt in the bottom of the fifth.  DiMaggio led off with a single, his team's first hit of the afternoon, while Wagner and Pawlak each followed with one-base hits to load the bases.  Shea Beaumont put the Gators on the board with a sacrifice fly to left field, before Carone singled to score Wagner, and Pouch singled home Pawlak and Carone to cut the deficit to 10-4.

Leading off the bottom of the sixth, DiMaggio cracked a home run to left-center field, his first long ball of the season, to pull to within 10-5.

The Pipers took advantage of a pair of errors in the seventh to add a run and make it 11-5, but the Gators again countered with a big bottom half.  Carone led off with a double to left field, and promptly scored on Pouch's single to center.  A Cullen Flaherty single moved Pouch to third, and two batters later, Jacob Shick beat out an infield single to third base to bring home Pouch and make the score 11-7.  With two outs, Wagner then blooped a single into right field to score Shick and Flaherty and pull the Gators to within two, 11-9.

Hamline would add another unearned run in the top of the eighth, using a pair of errors, a stolen base, and a sacrifice fly to make it 12-9, but again the Gators countered with a tally in the bottom of the frame.  Pouch led off with his third single of the day to center, and came home two batters later when Austin Bristol tripled to the right field corner to again trim the gap to two runs.

Allegheny would get no closer, however, as Hamline's Joe Setrum homered to lead off the ninth and again up the lead to three.  The Gators then went down in order in the bottom of the frame, and Hamline escaped with the win.

Hamline, which produced 17 hits on the day, was led by the duo of Colin Ostad and Devin Rodgers, who each finished with three hits.  Ostad drove in three RBIs, while Rodgers scored a trio of runs.  The Pipers' Zach Munserman was credited with the win on the mound, throwing the middle 2 1/3 innings, before Jake Dujmovic threw the final 2 1/3 frames to earn the save.

The Gators will return to action on Friday with a split doubleheader on their penultimate day in the Cactus State.  Allegheny opens the day with a single, 9-inning tilt against Wisconsin-Superior beginning at 9 a.m. local time (12 p.m. EST), before taking on Grinnell at 12:30 p.m. local/3:30 p.m. EST.
