DELAWARE, Ohio - A corner kick goal three minutes into overtime lifted host Ohio Wesleyan to a 1-0 win over Allegheny in a North Coast Athletic Conference battle at the Martin Soccer Complex.
The Battling Bishops' Joe Brush headed home teammate Adam Yingling's corner to the back far post with 7:27 left in overtime to deal the Gators the heartbreaking loss.
"Tonight was our most complete game of the year," said Gator head coach
Angelo Panzetta. "We played a focued 90 minutes. I thought we deserved a better outcome, but it falls on us to score.  We did so many good things tonight, and now we have to carry over the confidence to our next game and bury the chances that we create."
Allegheny's
David Stekla recorded six saves in goal, including four in the final 15 minutes of the second half to help send the game into overtime in a scoreless tie.
The Gators had the advantage in possession throughout a majority of the defensive-themed first half. While much of the action was contested in the middle third of the field, Allegheny racked six of the game's first eight shots. In the 32nd minute,
Bryce Evans and
Ian Chick each had chances inside 25 yards, but both would miss the mark, while three minute later,
Izaak Miller was denied by a nice save from OWU keeper JP Baughman on what would prove to be the final shot of the opening frame.
The pace picked up in the second half, and the Gators received the first big scoring chance of the second frame. A clear following an OWU free kick found Chick in transition, but his shot from 20 yards out was stopped by Baughman in the 48th minute. Three minutes later, after a shot was blocked out of bounds by the Gator defense, Ohio Wesleyan received a corner kick, but the ensuing header in front was gobbled up by Stekla through traffic.
Tide would then turn in favor of the Gators, who tallied five shots and two corner kicks in an eight-minute span beginning in the 54th minute. Baughman made saves on
Jon Sion and Evans, while another attempt by Sion was blocked down by the defense, a header off of a corner by
Liam McKersie sailed just wide.
After the Allegheny offensive flurry, OWU looked to take control, forcing Stekla to make a pair of saves in a 50-second span in the 75th minute. The Battling Bishops continued the blitzkreig for the remainder of the half, tallying five corner kicks and seven shots over the final 10 minutes of regulation. Led by Stekla, the Gator back line kept OWU off the board, with the senior making three late saves, including a leaping effort to punch out a free kick from 25 yards out with just inside five minutes remaining. The Battling Bishops found the cross bar with a shot in the 86th minute, while the Gator defense blocked away two shots down the stretch to keep the hosts off the board at the conclusion of regulation.
Ohio Wesleyan kept up the pressure to start the overtime period, with Brush's game-winner coming on his team's second corner kick, and only shot, of the extra session.
Aided by a 16-7 margin in the second half, Ohio Wesleyan out-shot Allegheny 20-13 for the match, while finishing with a 12-2 advantage in corner kicks (8-1 in the second half). Nine different Gator players were credited with at least one shot, with Miller, Evans, Sion, Chick, and
Danny Reid each tallying two apiece. Baughman ended the 92-minute affair with a total of four saves for OWU in the shutout.
The Gators (3-8, 0-3 NCAC) will return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 12, playing host to NCAC rival Hiram at Frank B. Fuhrer Field beginning at 7:30 p.m.
