OBERLIN, Ohio—The Allegheny College volleyball team fell on the road in their North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) finale Wednesday (Oct. 25) at Oberlin.
The Yeowomen won the sets 28-26, 25-12
The Gators and the Yeowomen went back-and-forth throughout the early parts of the opening set. Oberlin gained a 9-6 advantage but the Gators responded with a 4-1 run to tie it at 10. After trading points, the Yeowomen took a 15-12 lead. Once again, the Gators fought back, tying the set at 17. The Gators won the ensuing point to take the lead, forcing a timeout by Oberlin. Following the timeout, the teams continued to go back-and-forth with each other, with Oberlin calling their second timeout as the Gators led 22-21. The Gators earned the first set point at 24-21. The Yeowomen responded with a 3-0 run to tie it at 24. After a Gator timeout, the Gators earned two more match points but were unable to close as the Yeowomen gained a 27-26 advantage, forcing the Gators to call their second timeout. The Gators were unable to win the following point as Oberlin took set one 28-26.
Oberlin jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the second set. The Gators called a timeout trailing 10-5 but it failed to halt the Yeowomen momentum as they went on a 5-0 right after. The Oberlin advantage grew to 17-5 before the Gators broke up the run. The Gators made up some ground late in the set but ultimately fell 25-12.
Similar to the second set, the Yeowomen started the third on a 6-2 run. The Gators closed the gap to 9-6 before Oberlin went on a 3-0 run, bringing about a Gator timeout. Following timeout, Oberlin increased their lead to 16-9. A block by
Hannah Cubarney led to a 5-2 Gator run, bringing the score to 18-14. However, the Yeowomen went on a 6-4 run to earn a match point. The Gators fought off the first but Oberlin clinched the match on their second chance.
Tamara Babic led the Gators with six kills.
Leah Franzluebbers and
Alysha Crowther had four apiece while
Justine Kelly had three. Kelly also added 16 assists, eight digs and two aces.
Terra Schall led the Gator defense with 16 digs.
Rachel Slotterback had 11 while
Kylee Karczewski had 10.
The Gators are back in action Friday (Oct. 27) at Brockport State.
