WOOSTER, Ohio - The College of Wooster used a stifling defense to defeat Allegheny 2-0 in a North Coast Athletic Conference battle at a windswept Carl Dale Field.
Offensively, Wooster picked up one goal in each half, while defensively, the Fighting Scots held the Gators without a shot on goal for the duration of the contest.
With the loss, the Gators fall to 7-9 overall, while they slid to third-place in the NCAC with a 4-3 mark and 12 points with one game left to play. Wooster wrapped up its regular season with the victory to leapfrog the Gators into second place in the NCAC standings with a conference record of 4-3-1.Â
The first half, played through constant drizzle and wind, was defensive themed, with neither team receiving many substantial scoring chances. Wooster, who was credited with the only four shots of the opening 45 minutes, scored the game's first goal in the 16th minute. After Gator keeper
Maya Hackman made a save in close, the Fighting Scots' Krenare Rakoci pounced on the rebound and scored to make it 1-0.
Following Rakoci's opening strike, Wooster was granted a pair of corner kicks in the 21st minute, but the Gator defense prevented the hosts from cashing in. Â
With just over 14 minutes left in the half, the Gators saw a long possession result in a corner kick, but could not take advantage of the set piece. Neither team would take a shot over the final 12 minutes of the half, and Wooster entered the intermission with the one-goal lead.
The Fighting Scots pressed offensively to start the second half, putting forth six shots in the first nine minutes. Hackman and the Gator defense were up to the test, as the rookie turned in four saves over the span, while the Gator back line blocked the two other attempts, to keep the deficit at one.
Hackman turned in her fifth save of the half in the 68th minute, but two minutes later, the Fighting Scots would score an insurance marker on a high, lofting shot from Rakoci from 25 yards out to make it 2-0 with just over 19 minutes left to play.
The Gators were unable to mount a comeback, as the Wooster defense continually thwarted any sustained Allegheny possessions, preventing the Gators from any late scoring chances.
Wooster tallied 10 second half shots, with Hackman making six saves over the second frame to finish with seven stops for the match.
Allegheny will now close out the regular season with a 12 p.m. Senior Day match against Kenyon on Sat. Oct. 28 at The Robertson Athletic Complex. Kenyon has clinched the top seed in the upcoming four-team NCAC Championship Tournament, but the Gators remain in prime contention for a playoff berth, and with a win over Kenyon, would earn a first round home game.Â
