MEADVILLE, Pa. - A strong second half lifted visiting Kenyon to a 2-0 victory over the Gators in a rain-soaked Senior Day contest at the Robertson Athletic Complex.
The win clinched the North Coast Athletic Conference regular season title for Kenyon (9-6-2, 7-0-1), while it, coupled with Wittenberg's 3-0 victory over Hiram, ended the season for the Gators (7-10, 4-4 NCAC).
In a driving rain, the first half was an evenly-played defensive battle. Kenyon had the first chance of the game, but Gator rookie
Maya Hackman turned in her first of nine saves of the day on a shot in the seventh minute. Just 70 seconds later, Allegheny saw its first scoring chance, but
Shannon McGuinn's blast from less than 15 yards went just wide of the cage.
With just over 12 minutes left in the half, the Gators received their first corner kick chance of the game, and came close to taking a 1-0 lead, but
Blair Proteau's header off of
Isabella Martinez's corner sailed just over the crossbar.
Proteau's header attempt proved to be the final real scoring chance for either team, as the final 11 minutes of the half were primarily contested in the middle third of the field, and the teams would enter the locker room deadlocked in a scoreless tie. Kenyon held a slim 6-5 margin in shots over the opening frame, while the Gators had two of the three first half corner kicks.
Kenyon upped its offensive pressure following the intermission, with a number of long, dangerous possessions in the opening minutes. Just 61 seconds into the half, Hackman was forced to make a big save on a shot from less than 18 yards out, and the Ladies would continue to press.
Five minutes into the half, the Allegheny defense blocked a pair of Kenyon attempts, before a third blocked shot three minutes later would lead to Kenyon's first corner kick of the second frame, and the Ladies would cash in. Gillian Blakewell send a low corner kick into traffic in front, where it was immediately deflected to the top of the box. The deflection went right to the foot of teammate Caroline McNeer, who promptly sent a strong shot through traffic and into the upper 90 for the game's first goal with 34:41 left in regulation.
The Ladies continued the offensive onslaught, rattling off eight shots in the seven subsequent minutes following McNeer's strike. Hackman would make four saves over the span, while one shot rang off the crossbar and two were blocked by the Gator back line. With 19 minutes left, Hackman made another big stop when she leaped to gobble up a deflection at the doorstep off of a corner kick.
Kenyon finally broke through for an insurance tally with 11 minutes left in regulation, when Brianna Maggard took a lead pass from Meredith Rogers and broke through the defense to score from 15 yards out to make it 2-0.
A last gasp effort by the Gators produced a pair of shots in the 83rd minute, but they were unable to find the net.
Over the second half, Kenyon out-shot the Gators 18-2, while they finished with a 24-7 margin in shots for the game. Hackman posted seven second half saves, and nine for the match.
The match was the last one in the careers of four Gator seniors -
Sierra Beaty,
Sam Brooks,
Sarah Donohue, and
Sarah Sherwood - and the quartet was honored in a pre-game ceremony for their strong four-year tenures in the blue and gold.
