Second Half Comeback Boosts Gators to Homecoming Win

MEADVILLE, Pa. – Allegheny recovered from a nine-point third quarter deficit to post a 44-35 victory over Kenyon in a back-and-forth Homecoming Day battle at a raucous Frank B. Fuhrer Field.

After trailing 28-19 midway through the third quarter, the Gators responded with 23 points in less than 14 minutes of game action, with Logan Lee's 35-yard touchdown pass to Angel Alvarez with 8:41 left in regulation proving to be the game-winner, as it put the Gators up 42-35.  The Allegheny defense would put an exclamation point on the win, as Colten Buzard sacked Kenyon quarterback Thomas Merkle in the end zone with 1:02 left to close out the game's scoring and seal the victory.

For the second time in three games, Lee fired five touchdown passes, while the junior set a career-high with 324 passing yards on 19 completions.  Sophomore Alex Victor racked up 154 all-purpose yards and scored three touchdowns, including a pair of receptions and a 75-yard run on the Gators' opening play from scrimmage in the first quarter.

The Gator offense overcame three turnovers, as the unit totaled 485 yards for the game, and averaged 7.7 yards per play.

Taking over at their own 25 after Kenyon's opening drive ended in a punt, the Gators wasted little time in gaining an early lead.  On their first snap of the day, Victor took a sweep around the right end and down the sideline for a 75-yard touchdown to put the hosts up 6-0 exactly two minutes into the first quarter.

After forcing another Kenyon punt, the Gators had an opportunity to add onto the lead, but Zach Bednarowicz's 27-yard field goal attempt midway through the quarter was blocked.  The Lords took advantage of the miscue, as quarterback Thomas Merkle led his squad on a lengthy scoring drive that was capped off with a 26-yard touchdown pass to Ian Robertson that gave the Lords a 7-6 lead with five minutes left in the quarter.

Lee and the Gators answered right back.  After he completed a pair of passes to Ben Bachik for 38 yards to set up first-and-goal at the Kenyon six, Lee found Victor in the middle of the end zone for the touchdown that put the Gators back in front 13-7 with 2:04 left in the quarter.

Momentum would then swing toward Kenyon, as the Lords scored on each of their next two possessions, with Merkle completing a four-yard touchdown strike to John Clark, before Seamus McCurren ran for a 20-yard score to put the visitors in front 21-13 with 11:12 left in the second quarter.

The Gators scored the final points of the half with just over four minutes left with a six-play, 75-yard scoring drive that was highlighted by a 59-yard completion from Lee to Tristan Rhoades, and was capped off with a one-yard touchdown pass to Austin French.  The two-point try to tie the game failed, and the Gators trailed 21-19 with 3:45 left in the second quarter.

Kenyon responded with a lengthy drive of its own, eventually advancing to the Allegheny 10 in the final seconds of the quarter.  On fourth down, the Lords would miss on a 27-yard field goal, but the play was nullified due to an Allegheny penalty.  With the ball then spotted at the five, the Lords would go for the touchdown on an untimed down, but Merkle's pass into the end zone was incomplete, and the score would remain 21-19 at the intermission.

The Gators were unable to re-gain the advantage on their first two drives of the third quarter, with the first ending in a turnover on downs and the second in a fumble, and Kenyon would up their lead to 28-19 on an eight-yard run by McCurren with 8:00 remaining in the quarter.

The ensuing kickoff was returned 36 yards by the Gators' Jake Wilson, setting up his squad at the Kenyon 45.  Just two plays later, Lee hooked up with Victor for a 30-yard touchdown pass to again pull the Gators to within two, 28-26, with 6:36 left in the quarter.

The teams would trade fumbles over their next two drives, before the Gators ended the third quarter driving.  Taking over at their own 45, Tyler Balla rumbled 13 yards to take it into Kenyon territory, before Lee connected with French for a 41-yard pass that set up first-and-goal on the final play of the quarter.  On the first snap of the fourth frame, Lee sent a perfect fade pass into the corner of the end zone that was hauled in by Rhoades for the touchdown.  The two would hook up once again for a successful two-point conversion that gave back the lead to the Gators, 34-28.

The lead was short-lived, however, as the Lords would jump back in front 35-34 after a 56-yard interception return touchdown from D.J. Manley with 11:23 left in regulation.

Lee and the Gators shrugged off the interception, embarking on a six-play scoring drive that would put them in front for good.  Alvarez made three catches for 63 yards on the drive, including the 35-yard touchdown with 8:41 to go.  Lee's two-point conversion pass to Victor was good, and the Gators led 42-35.

Allegheny's defense would then ensure that the Gator lead would hold up.  After Alvarez's go-ahead touchdown, Kenyon would eventually advance inside the Gator 40 yardline.  On third-and-one at the 39, Seth Warburton and Marcus Davenport teamed up to stop McCurren for no gain, before Davenport batted down a Merkle pass at the line of scrimmage to force the turnover on downs.

Allegheny's next drive came up empty after a missed field goal with two minutes left, but the Gator defense again came up big to seal the win. On first down, Buzard dropped Merkle for a five-yard sack, before Kyle McGee and Vito Antinozzi teamed up for a one-yard sack on Merkle's next drop back.  Facing third and 21 at the nine, Buzard broke through for the Gators' third straight sack, this one in the end zone for a safety that would put the Gators up 44-35.  On the free kick, Kenyon's onside attempt was recovered by Allegheny's Craye Nehler with 58 seconds left, and the Gators would run out the clock for the win.

Rhoades led both sides with 102 receiving yards on four targets,  while Victor finished with six catches for 72 yards, French four for 50, and Alvarez three for 63.  Victor also led the Gators with 82 yards on the ground, while Balla added 70.

Merkle had a strong game in defeat for the Lords, completing 33 of 51 passes for 260 yards.  Robertson hauled in 12 catches for an even 100 yards, while McCurren topped the century mark on the ground with 136 yards and two scores on 20 carries.

Defensively, Chase Balla recorded a career-high 11 tackles, while also breaking up a pair of passes.  Nehler made eight stops, while Buzard finished with seven, including 2.5 sacks to increase his NCAC-leading total to 9.0.  The Gators totaled five sacks on the day, with McGee finishing with 1.5, and Antinozzi and Travis Thomas each assisting on one.

The leading tackler in the NCAC, Curt Williams led Kenyon with 12 stops, while Hayden Gaus made seven, and Michael Picone had a pair of sacks.

The Gators will now take to the road for their next tilt, as they travel to Greencastle, Indiana to face #25 DePauw on Saturday, Oct. 28 beginning at 1 p.m.

GAME NOTES: Lee became the first Gator in program history to fire five touchdown passes in a game twice in a season… With his two receiving touchdowns, Victor now has 17 for his career, third-most in a program history.  Eight of his team-leading nine touchdown grabs this season have gone for at least 30 yards…  Victor's 75-yard touchdown run in the first quarter was Allegheny's longest since Kyle Geiser's 79-yard touchdown run against Earlham on Nov. 8, 2003… Buzard's 9.0 sacks are the most in a single season for the Gators since Corey Belaney totaled 9.5 in 1998… The win snapped a five-game losing skid against Kenyon, with the Gators' last win over the Lords coming on Oct. 8, 2011, a 31-17 decision in Gambier, Ohio.
