GREENCASTLE, Ind. – Allegheny junior
Logan Lee became the team's single-season record holder for touchdown passes, but host Depauw rode a big second quarter to a 42-26 win over the Gators in North Coast Athletic Conference action at Blackstock Stadium.
With Lee's four touchdown strikes, he now has 26 for the season to eclipse Jimmy Savage's previous team record of 24 set in 2008. Three of Lee's TDs went to sophomore
Alex Victor, who upped his season total to 12 touchdown receptions, tied for most in a single-season in team history.
Lee completed 22 of 32 passes for 302 yards in the loss, marking his third 300-yard performance of the season. Victor was his favorite target, as he hauled in eight grabs for 113 yards to top the century mark for the third time this season.
DePauw quarterback Jake Lasky also had a big day, completing 15 of 21 passes for 413 yards and five touchdowns, while also leading both sides with 87 rushing yards.
The teams traded scoreless possessions to open the game, with Allegheny's first set ending in a punt and the Tigers' in a missed field goal, before the Gators score the first points of the afternoon.
On their second drive, Lee completed six of seven passes for 72 yards, capped off with a nine-yard touchdown pass to Victor. After a failed two-point conversion, the Gators led 6-0 with 2:30 left in the first quarter.
Just three plays after the Victor touchdown, the Gators looked to be in prime position to add to their lead, as
Vito Antinozzi ended DePauw's subsequent trip with his first career interception at the DePauw 37.
Allegheny couldn't cash in, however, and was forced to punt, with Cody Wednt's boot landing inside the DePauw two yardline. Aided by a pair of Allegheny penalties, the hosts would mount an impressive 16-play, 98-yard drive that would end in a two-yard touchdown run from Ramon Lopez to give DePauw a 7-6 lead with 7:31 left in the half.
Each of the Gators' next two possessions ended in punts, while Depauw would go to the air to find the end zone on its next two trips, first on a 73-yard touchdown strike from Lasky to Jake Hagen, and then a 56-yarder to Andy Hunt, to take a 21-6 lead into halftime.
The Tigers used the same recipe to add to its lead in the third quarter, as Lasky hooked up with Ben Wilson on a 54-yard touchdown pass to go up 28-6 with 6:21 remaining in the quarter.
The Gators would then come back to life. Taking over at their own 26, Lee opened the ensuing drive with an eight-yard completion to
Angel Alvarez, before a 19-yard run by
Tyler Balla Lee and Victor would then hook up for a 45-yard touchdown strike to cut the gap to 28-12 with 5:02 left in the third quarter.
Allegheny's defense then forced a DePauw punt, and the Gators would end the quarter driving, as a 32-yard pass from Lee to Alvarez brought the ball inside the DePauw 30, before a pair of rushed from Balla took it inside the 18 to end the quarter. On the first snap of the final frame, Lee found
Dwaine Barber for a 17-yard touchdown, and the two-point conversion was good to pull the Gators to within one score, 28-20.
DePauw wasted little time in adding to its advantage, needing just two plays to cover 68 yards and take a 35-20 lead on a 15-yard pass from Lasky to Hunt. After forcing a Gator turnover on downs, DePauw made it 42-20 on a 39-yard pass from Lasky to Hunt with just inside 11 minutes remaining.
Lee and the Gators went back to work. On third down, he connected with
Tristan Rhoades for a 12-yard completion, before the pair hooked up again, this time for 32 yards, to set up first down at the DePauw 25. A pair of Balla runs brought the ball inside the DePauw 10, before Lee found Victor for a 10-yard touchdown to make the score 42-26 with 7:24 left.
Victor's third touchdown of the afternoon proved to be the Gators' final offensive play, as DePauw would go to the ground to chew up the final 7:20 and close out the win.
Victor was one of five Gators to make at least three catches on the day, as Alvarez finished with four receptions for 60, Rhoades three for 64, Barber three for 37, and Balla three for 16. Balla gained a team-high 67 rushing yards.
Defensively,
Chase Balla led both sides with a career-high 15 tackles, including 10 solo stops.
Colten Buzard continued his strong season on the defensive line, posting eight tackles, including 3.5 for a loss and one sack, while
Travis Thomas and
Marcus Davenport each had five tackles, with Davenport also forcing and recovering a fumble.
Hagen was Lasky's favorite target on the afternoon, hauling in six catches for 163 yards, while Hunt added four catches for 130. Defensively, Connor Perkins led DePauw with nine tackles, while Nate Orrison finished with a pair of sacks.
The Gators will be back in action on Sat. Nov. 4,when they host Wabash in their final home game of the season at Frank B. Fuhrer Field. Prior to the game, the team will recognize its senior class.
