MEADVILLE, Pa. - After DePauw scored a pair of late goals to send the game into overtime, Allegheny senior
Sarah Donohue netted a golden goal with 55 seconds left in the first extra session to lift the Gators to a 4-3 win at the Robertson Athletic Complex.
The victory moves Allegheny to 3-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference, and 6-7 overall, while DePauw falls to 3-10 overall, and 2-3 in the NCAC.
With just inside a minute left in overtime,
Shannon McGuinn led a rush into Tiger territory and sent a lead pass past a defender onto the foot of a streaking Donohue. The senior then made a move to the middle of the field, and sent a shot into the upper right corner of the net to give the Gators the victory.Â
Donohue's goal capped off a wild match at a toasty Robertson Athletic Complex that saw DePauw overcome a red card to score a pair of shorthanded goals just 70 seconds apart in the 83rd and 84th minutes. Â
The Gators took an early 1-0 lead less than five minutes into the first half. After a foul inside DePauw territory,
Isabella Martinez blasted a direct kick from 25 yards out off the crossbar. The rebound came right to
Taylor Renk, who popped it over Tiger keeper Natalie Sheeks to give Allegheny the early lead just 4:55 into play.
The teams would trade possession in the middle third of the field throughout much of the first half, before the Gators looked primed to add an insurance tally in the 32nd minute. After McGuinn rang a rocket off the crossbar, Allegheny was able to keep possession. A shot from Donohue was saved at point blank range, but the rebound quickly spurted free, and was sent home by
Isabel Wroblewski for her first career goal, making the score 2-0 with 12:09 left in the half.
DePauw quickly countered, scoring its first goal just two minutes later, when Mary Goodale took a lead pass from Alex Wendt and scored from six yards out to make the score 2-1, which is how it would stand at the intermission.
The second half featured back-and-forth action for the first 25 minutes. Sheets made three saves over the span, while Gator keeper
Maya Hackman stopped two shots, and the lead would hold at 2-1. Â
With 17 minutes left in regulation, the Gators were granted a corner kick, and Martinez sent the ball into traffic, where it banged off of a pair of Gators and toward the gaping goal. A DePauw defender was then whistled for a red card after a hand ball in the box, leading to a penalty kick opportunity for Martinez. She blasted it into upper 90 for her first goal of the season, giving Allegheny some breathing room at 3-1.
Despite playing a player down, DePauw upped the offensive pressure, and the Gator defense would withstand it until the 83rd minute, when Bridget Brendza scored to make it 3-2. Sixty-six seconds later, DePauw completed the comeback, when Shelli Kumar scored off of an assist from Katie Webb to tie it at 3-all. Neither team could score over the final five minutes of regulation, and the game would head into overtime.
In the extra session, Hackman kept the Gators alive with a pair of saves over the first two minutes. She made a third overtime save in the 94th minute, which led to a break down the field for the Gators. Renk came in all alone on Sheeks, but the keeper would charge out of the box to cut off Renk and smother the shot.
With just over a minute left to play, the Gators picked up possession just inside the midfield line, and rushed into Tiger territory. McGuinn gathered the ball in the middle of the field, and after attracting two defenders, dished it forward to Donohue, who took a couple of dribbles before burying her shot from just outside the box to end the game.
Both teams tallied 15 shots on the afternoon, with Hackman making seven saves to earn the win, and Sheeks six. Donohue led Allegheny with six shots, while Renk, Martinez, and McGuinn were each credited with two apiece.
The victory marked Allegheny's first over DePauw since the 2014 campaign.
The Gators will return to action on Wed. Oct. 18, traveling to Ohio to take on Oberlin College under the lights at 7:30 p.m.
