Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Yeowomen Snap Gator Win Streak

OBERLIN, Ohio – The Allegheny women's soccer team saw its two-game winning streak come to a close with a 2-0 setback at North Coast Athletic Conference foe Oberlin.

The Yeowomen (8-2-4, 1-2-3 NCAC) scored in the opening stages of each half, while showcasing a stingy defense that limited the Gators (6-8, 3-2 NCAC) to just seven shots on the night.

The opening 10 minutes were a feeling-out period between the two squads, with neither enjoying any long stretches of possession.

In the 13th minute, the Yeowomen took the lead, when Lucy Fredell scored from 20 yards out off of a pass from Izzy Rosenstein.

Less than 90 seconds after Fredell's first strike, the Yeowomen had another dangerous rush up the field, but Gator keeper Maya Hackman gobbled up the shot from just inside the box.

Halfway through the opening frame, the Gators were granted a pair of corner kicks less than a minute apart, but weren't able to cash in.  Eight minutes later, the Gators' Isabella Martinez got a solid look at goal, but saw her shot saved from just under 15 yards out.

Allegheny would hold the advantage in possession over the final 13 minutes of the half, but managed just one more shot, a Martinez attempt that was saved with 75 seconds left to play.

The Yeowomen closed the half with a 7-3 advantage in shots, with Hackman turning in three first half saves.

Just two minutes into the second half, Oberlin doubled up its lead, as Gwennie Gardner scored her NCAC-leading 18th goal of the season.

The Yeomen kept up the pressure, taking three of the game's next four shots, including a dangerous look on a free kick in the 51st minute that sailed just over the crossbar.

With just inside 30 minutes remaining, Oberlin had an 3-on-2 break deep inside of Gator territory, but Hackman thwarted the threat by scrambling 30 yards out of the cage and smothering the ball before the Yeowomen could get off a shot.

Moments later, the Gators received their first real scoring chance of the half, but a quick shot from the middle of the box by Isabel Wrobleski off of a long throw was saved.  After some more back-and-forth play, the Gators again narrowly missed a chance at cutting into the deficit with 18 minutes left when a shot from Adele Gilman went just high.

At the 82nd minute mark, the Gators were awarded a corner kick, but the header off of Martinez's went wide and was cleared away.  After the corner, Gators would continue to maintain possession in the Yeowomen half of the field down the stretch, but were stifled by Oberlin's defense, which surrendered just one more shot to close out the shutout win.

The Yeowomen ended the night with a 16-7 advantage in shots, with Martinez registering three to lead the Gators. Hackman totaled five saves in goal, while her Oberlin counterpart, Jordyn Morris, made four stops for the clean sheet.

Allegheny will look to get back on track this Saturday, Oct. 21, when they travel to Springfield, Ohio to take on Wittenberg in a pivotal NCAC match, as the two teams are tied for third in the conference with identical 3-2 records.  Game time is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
