Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Allegheny Edged by Geneva in Overtime

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. - The Allegheny men's soccer team was defeated 2-1 in overtime at Geneva College in non-conference action.

After Allegheny's Aaron Donahoe scored the game-tying goal with 29 minutes left in the second half, the Golden Tornadoes needed just two minutes in the extra session to score the game-winner on a header from 10 yards out off of a long cross.

The two squads traded shots in the opening 11 minutes of play, before the Gators had a pair of chances in a two-minute span midway through the half, as shots by Bryce Evans at 17' and Jonas Skattum at 19' were blocked at the doorstep.  Evans repaid the favor, denying a Geneva shot in the 23rd minute, before a Golden Tornado kick led to a header up close that was denied by Gator keeper Chris DeNelle just over 27 minutes into play.

Evans had another attempt saved with seven minutes left in the half, before Geneva's final two attempts of the opening stanza went wide.

The hosts came out strong in the second half, and after an Allegheny foul, the Golden Tornadoes scored the game's first goal, when Abel Carleton volleyed a pass from Jonathan Shoat into the back post to make the score 1-0 just six minutes into the second stanza.

Geneva kept up the pressure, but DeNelle made his second save of the game in the 53rd minute, before the Gator defense blocked another Golden Tornado attempts.

In the 61st minute, the Gators evened the score, when Donahoe scored his team-leading third goal of the season after volleying a bouncing ball into the cage to make it 1-1 with 28:09 left in regulation.

Both teams had opportunities in the closing minutes of regulation, but neither was able to capitalize.  With three minutes left, Evans was denied from a shot up close, before the Gators' Liam McKersie stepped in the way of a dangerous Geneva shot just 50 seconds later.  The Golden Tornadoes maintained possession over the final 1:30, but Allegheny's defense withstood a pair of corner kicks to send the game into overtime.

The Golden Tornadoes wasted little time in overtime to score the golden goal, as their first extended possession of the extra session resulted in a goal by David McKinley on a header from 10 yards out off of a cross-field pass from Jake Broadwick to end the game.

Geneva ended the night with a 14-8 advantage in shots, with DeNelle making a pair of saves in goal for the Gators.  Evans led Allegheny's offense with five shots to tie for the match lead.

The Gators will look to bounce back when they return to action on Saturday, Oct. 1, as the Gators will close out Homecoming festivities at Frank B. Fuhrer Field with a 5:30 p.m. match against NCAC foe Wittenberg.
