MEADVILLE, Pa. - After yielding a goal just 48 seconds into play, the Gators used a pair of first half scores from
Izaak Miller to earn a 2-1 comeback win over Wittenberg on Homecoming at a rainy Frank B. Fuhrer Field.
Wittenberg took an early 1-0 lead in the first minute, but after Miller tied it just 70 seconds later, the junior struck again in the 15th minute to give the Gators a 2-1 lead that they wouldn't relinquish.
Receiving the ball to start the game, Wittenberg took advantage of a poor Gator clearing attempt at the top of the goal box, which led directly to a Samuel Archibald score just 48 seconds into play.
Allegheny quickly countered, as
Jonas Skattum broke free down the middle for a breakaway. His blast from 10 yards out rocketed just off the post, but the rebound caromed right to Miller, who tapped it into the yawning goal to tie the game at 1:59.
The tying goal invigorated the Gators, as they maintained possession deep inside Wittenberg territory for the next several minutes. The Gators were granted three corner kicks between the ninth and 12th minutes, while a shot from Skattum was saved 14:39 into play. The skies would then open, leading to a 40-minute lightning delay, but the Gators picked up right where they left off following the respite, and quickly took the lead.
Moments after the teams re-took the field following the weather stoppage,
Liam McNamee sent in a long throw through traffic to Skattum in the box. The senior then tipped it to Miller, who sent it home for his second goal of the half to put the Gators up 2-1 15:57 into play.
Allegheny looked primed for an insurance goal in the 18th minute, when
Zach Stryker sent a perfect corner kick to the doorsteap where it was met by a leaping
Tolossa Hassan, who's header beat everyone but bounced off the crossbar.
After another Hassan shot was stopped up close, Wittenberg came to life, as the Tigers took five shots and a pair of corner kicks over the final 14 minutes of the half, only to come up empty. Gator keeper C.J. DeNelle made a pair of saves, and the Gators preserved the one-goal halftime lead.
Wittenberg took the first three shots of the second stanza but came up empty, before the Gators were unable to put home a pair of cracks in the 58th minute, as Tiger keeper Jack Snider saved a blast from
Nick Dias, before
Ian Chick's attempt went just wide following the rebound.
Snider made another impressive stop on a leaping header by Aaron Donohoe in the 65th minute, and Wittenberg's offense again went on the attack, forcing Stekla to make a pair of saves in a 50-second span in the 70th minute. The Tigers continued to press, and nearly scored the equalizer with just 30 seconds left in regulation, but a shot on a breakaway went just wide, and the Gators escaped with the win.
Wittenberg out-shot the Gators 8-5 over the final 45 minutes, and ended the game with a slim 17-15 advantage on the shot clock. DeNelle made a pair of saves in the first half, before Stekla closed out the game with five stops over the second frame.
Allegheny will now have a week-long respite before returning to action on Saturday, Oct. 8, when the Gators will travel to Granville, Ohio to take on NCAC foe Denison in a 2:30 p.m. affair.
