GAMBIER, Ohio - Host Kenyon used a strong passing attack and a stifling run defense to defeat the Gators 31-7 in North Coast Athletic Conference action at McBride Field.
The Gators (0-4, 0-3 NCAC) scored on their first possession of the game, with an 85-yard touchdown strike from
Logan Lee to
Alex Victor, but it was the lone offensive highlight of the day for the visitors, as Kenyon (3-1, 2-1 NCAC) limited Allegheny to just 174 yards of total offense.
Receiving the opening kickoff, Kenyon moved methodically down the field, while taking adavntage of a pair of costly Allegheny penalties, to take an early 7-0 lead. On the 16-play, 85-yard drive that spanned eight minutes, the Lords converted on three third downs, while the Gators twice committed fourth down penalties, including one on a fourth-and-one on their own nine yard line.
Taking over at their own 15 after a block in the back foul on the ensuing kickoff, the Gators wasted little time in evening the score. On their first play from scrimmage, Lee hit Victor just off the sideline near midfield.
The speedy freshman broke through a pair of tackles, and raced untouched into the end zone for the 85-yard touchdown.
Ben Ziolkowski's extra point was good, and the game was knotted at seven with 6:49 left in the opening quarter. The 85-yard pass marked the fourth-longest in program history, with Lee engineering two of them, after a 94-yarder to
Alec Hutchin two weeks earlier at Wooster.
After the fast start for the two offenses, each team's defense would then take over, as both squads would punt twice over the final 6:45 of the quarter.
On Kenyon's first drive of the second stanza, the Gators'
Matt Ledesma picked up a third down sack of 10 yards to force yet another Kenyon punt, which traveled 45 yards. It was received by Victor, who immediately put Allegheny in scoring territory with a 53-yard return. The Gators' only managed six yards on the next three plays, setting up a 33-yard field goal attempt with 11:12 remaining, but it went wide right, and the game remained tied.
The defensive theme continued over the next several minutes, with Allegheny's defense surrendering a total of just 10 yards on Kenyon's next two possessions. The Lords proved to be just as effective, forcing a pair of Gator punts, and the hosts would close out the half by taking the lead with 1:27 left on a 67-yard pass from Thomas Merkle to Brian Hunca to make it 14-7.
Allegheny's first trip of the third quarter ended in another punt, giving the Lords the ball at the Gator 36 yard line, but the visitors looked primed to get the ball right back, after Ledesma's second sack of the day, followed by an incomplete pass, left Kenyon facing fourth-and-nine at the Allegheny 35. The Lords would then gamble, and it would pay off, as Merkle and Hunca hooked up yet again for a 35-yard touchdown pass to go up 21-7 with 11:08 left in the third quarter.
The Gators looked to counter on their ensuing trip, converting on fourth down on a two-yard run by
Tyler McLaughlin before Lee found
John McFarland for an 11-yard pass to put the ball at midfield, but the drive would sputter, resulting in a 39-yard McLaughlin punt inside the Kenyon 10-yardline.
As they did on their opening possession of the first quarter, the persistent Kenyon offense embarked on another lengthy drive, covering 70 yards in 16 plays before Szabi Simo's 38-yard field goal pushed the Kenyon lead to 24-7 in the closing seconds of the third quarter.
The Allegheny offense was unable to get on track in the fourth quarter, and Kenyon scored the final points of the day with 6:30 left on a 14-yard touchdown run from Nat Henry that capped off a 10-play, 71-yard drive and produced the 31-7 final score.
Lee completed 14 of 28 passes for 174 yards, with McFarland hauling in a team-best seven catches for 45 yards. Merkle had a big day under center for the Lords, completing 21 of 29 passes for 270 yards and two touchdowns, both to Hunca, who led both sides with 10 catches for 190 yards.
Defensively,
Deangelo Logan paced Allegheny with 10 tackles, including six solo, while
Tristan Rhoades and
David Perez each tallied eight tackles. Ledesma produced five tackles, with 2.5 TFLs including the two sacks, while Perez made a pair of tackles behind the line of scrimmage. Kenyon was led by Mike Gibbons' nine tackles, while teammate Jamal Perkins had 3.0 TFLs, including two sacks.
The Gators will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 1, hosting NCAC foe Oberlin in a 1:30 p.m. tilt on Homecoming at Frank B. Fuhrer Field.
