UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – Sophomore
Cy Perry had two hits, two RBI's, and threw a scoreless inning on the mound, as the Gators ran their winning streak to 10 with a 6-4 victory at John Carroll.
The Gators (20-12) came back from an early 2-0 deficit with four runs in the second and two more in the fourth, as they clinched their fourth consecutive 20-win season and swept the season series with the Blue Streaks (17-19).
The hosts got on the board in the bottom of the first, using two singles, a double and an RBI groundout to jump to an early 2-0 lead.
Allegheny came right back in the top half of the second to gain a lead it would not relinquish.
Joe Killian opened the frame with a single to left, before scoring the Gators' first run on a
Tyler Wagner double. A single to center from
Chase Davis put runners at the corners, before Perry cleared the bases with a triple to right field. A subsequent error in the outfield allowed Perry to race all the way around the bases and put the Gators on top 4-2.
In the home half of the second, Gator starter
Kyle O'Connell recorded a pair of quick outs, and looked to retire the side after striking out the third batter. However, the pitch went to the backstop, putting a runner on first who would score two batters later after a walk and a single to cut the lead to 4-3.
The Gators countered with some two-out lightning of their own in the top of the fourth inning. With two down, Perry again ignited the rally with a single to left.
Noah Shannon followed by recording his first career extra-base hit with a double to the gap in left center to bring home Perry.
Andrew Dawson promptly followed with an RBI base knock to right field, scoring Shannon and giving the Gators the 6-3 advantage.
In the bottom of the fourth, John Carroll opened the frame with a single and a hit batter, but O'Connell pitched out of the jam, keeping the lead at three after getting a pair of K's and a ground out. He would allow just one more base runner over the next two frames, before again running into trouble in the seventh, when John Carroll scored its fourth run by taking advantage of a hit batter, a single, and a fielder's choice to cut the gap to two.
O'Connell would then give way to Perry, who ended the inning with a strikeout. The Blue Streaks again threatened in the eighth, drawing a pair of walks, but Perry induced a big 6-4-3 double play to escape the jam. The hosts then opened the bottom of the ninth with a double to the gap in right center, but
Patrick Orr, the Gators' thudd hurler of the day, promptly got the Gators' second twin killing in as many innings, before ending the game with a strikeout to clinch his third save.
O'Connell earned his first career win, working 6.2 innings and allowing four runs on six hits, while notching a season-best seven strikeouts. Perry threw an inning and two thirds of scoreless relief, before Orr recorded the final three outs.
Offensively, the Gators out-hit the Blue Streaks by a 10-7 margin, led by multi-hit efforts by a trio of sophomores. Wagner went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, Perry finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, and Shannon finished 2-for-3 with a run and ribbie. A total of six Gators found the hit column on the afternoon.
Allegheny will now prep for a three-game weekend home set with DePauw as part of the North Coast Athletic Conference's crossover series. The teams will meet twice on Saturday, beginning at noon, before wrapping up the series with a single game at 12 p.m. on Sunday. The winner of the series will advance to the NCAC Championship Tournament, slated to begin on May 13 in Chillicothe, Ohio.
