NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A big second quarter run lifted Westfield State University over the Allegheny College women's basketball team 93-65 Thursday (Dec. 29) at the Music City Classic in Nashville.
The Gators jumped out to a 4-0 lead to start the game. After the Owls called a timeout trailing 8-5, the Gators increased their lead to 12-5. In the final minutes of the quarter, the Owls trimmed the lead down to two as the Gators led 17-15 heading into the second.
The Owls gained their first lead of the game early in the second, 22-20, on the heels of a 7-3 run. The Gators tied the game at 22 on an
Emily Smith layup; however the Owls went on a 15-0 run to take control. Following a Gator timeout, the Owls closed the quarter on a 10-5 run to take a 47-27 lead at the half.
Olivia Barkley had a big first half for the Gators, scoring nine while grabbing eight rebounds.
Delaney Arbore had five points.
Madison Caufield collected seven rebounds while
Kaylah Pinkney had five.
Zoe Soilis had three assists.
The Owls maintained control throughout the third quarter. The Gators brought the lead down to 18 but the Owls took a 75-49 lead into the fourth.
In the fourth quarter, the Owls pushed their lead to as much as 32 as they secured the nonconference victory.
Arbore ended the game with a team-high 15 points and five assists. Barkley was also in double digits with 13 points in addition to eight rebounds. Caufield had a career-high 12 rebounds.
Angela Martelli had a pair of blocks.
Offensively, the Gators shot 38.6% (27-of-70) from the floor. The Gators won the rebound battle 65-48. Of those rebounds, 20 were on the offensive glass.
Allegheny is back in action Friday (Dec. 30) for the final day of the Classic against Carthage College.
