Carthage Tops Gators at Music City Classic

NASHIVLLE, Tenn.—The Allegheny College women's basketball team fell in their final game of the 2016 calendar year against Carthage College 76-45 Friday (Dec. 30) at the Music City Classic in Nashville.

After going back-and-forth in the early part of the first quarter, the Lady Reds gained control, 20-11, on a 14-5 run with four minutes to play in the quarter.  The Gators brought the score back within six, 22-16, but the Lady Reds ended the quarter with a 26-16 lead.

The Gators started the second quarter strong, cutting the lead in half, 28-23. However, the Lady Reds answered with a 5-0 run to push their lead to 10 midway through the quarter.  A Gator timeout failed to slow Carthage down as they finished the first half with a 40-25 lead.

Olivia Barkley led the Gators offensively with seven points in the opening half.  Delaney Arbore finished the half with five points.  Madison Caufield led the Gators on the glass, collecting six rebounds. 

The Lady Reds controlled the flow of the third quarter, limiting the Gator offense as they took a 54-30 lead into the fourth.

In the fourth quarter, the Lady Reds led by as much as 33 as they sealed the nonconference win.

Emily Smith led the Gators offense with 10 points.  Barkley finished with nine points to go with six rebounds while Arbore finished with seven points and three assists.   Maia Joiner and Maria Didonato had five points apiece.  Caufield ended the game with nine rebounds, three steals and a pair of blocks.

From the free-throw line, the Gators converted nine-of-11 opportunities (82%).

The Gators return to North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play Jan. 7 at Denison University.
