Gators Fall in Nonconference Play at W&J

WASHINGTON, Pa.— The Allegheny College women's basketball team fell in nonconference action Tuesday (Nov. 22), 82-56, at Washington and Jefferson.

The teams traded baskets early on, however, the Presidents went on an 11-0 run with the game tied at five to take control of the first quarter.  Delaney Arbore broke up the run with a pair of free-throws with less than three to go in the quarter but the Presidents continued to push the pace as they took a 21-14 lead into the second.

The Presidents started the second on a 9-0 run, which was broken up by Kiersten Librizzi.  In the final minutes of the quarter, the Presidents outscored the Gators 12-3 as they took a 42-19 lead at the break.

Arbore ended the first half with eight points.  The Gators went six-of-six from the free-throw line. Defensively, Zoe Soilis led the Gators with seven rebounds.

The Presidents continued to control the pace of the game in the third quarter.  The Gators made up some ground midway through the third quarter but Washington and Jefferson pushed their advantage to as much as 32 as they led 64-32 after three quarters of play.

The Gators had their best quarter of offense in the fourth, outscoring the Presidents 24-18, but it was not enough to overcome the Presidents' lead.

Soilis led the Gators with a near double-double, scoring 11 points while grabbing nine rebounds.  Maia Joiner and Arbore ended the game with eight points apiece. Olivia Barkley, Jazmen Moore and Kaylah Pinkney had six points apiece. Emily Smith had a team-high three assists to go with three points. Haley Seifert collected seven rebounds.

The Gators shot 16-of-74 from the field but were 17-of-20 from the free-throw line.   The Presidents owned a slight edge in rebounds, 52-50, but the Gators grabbed 18 offensive rebounds to W&J's 11.

Allegheny is back in action Monday (Nov. 28) at the Rochester Institute of Technology.
