ROCHESTER, N.Y.— The Allegheny College women's basketball team fell in nonconference play at the Rochester Institute of Technology 87-49 Monday (Nov. 28).
The Tigers started the game on a 14-0 run, which prompted a timeout from the Gators midway through the first.
Zoe Soilis got the Gators on the board following their timeout. However, the Tigers continued to control the pace of the opening 10 minutes as they took a 26-5 lead into the second.
The Gators offense picked up some tempo in the second quarter, scoring 16 points. In the final minutes of the half, the Gators went on a 10-2 run. The Tigers kept pace with the Gators throughout the quarter as the teams went to the locker room with RIT leading 44-21.
Olivia Barkley led the Gators with six points in the opening half while
Michela Contestabile had five.
Maia Joiner led the Gators with five rebounds. The Gatos won the rebound battle in the opening half, 26-22. Fourteen of the Gators rebounds were on offense.
After trading baskets to start the third quarter, the Tigers started to pull away. The Gators were outscored 27-13 in the frame as they trailed 71-34 heading into the fourth.
The Gators scored the first four points of the final frame. The quarter went back-and-forth as the Tigers outscored the Gators 16-15 to seal the win.
Contestabile led the Gators offense with 12 points to go with eight rebounds, four blocks and three steals in 24 minutes of action. Barkley ended the game with eight points and four rebounds.
Emily Smith netted seven points while
Haley Seifert had six. Joiner finished the game with a team-high nine rebounds.
Overall, the Gators shot 25.7% (18-of-70) from the field. At the free-throw line, the Gators converted 11-of-14 attempts (78.6%). The Gators won the battle of the boards, outrebounding the Tigers 52-23. Of the 52 Gator rebounds, 25 were on the offensive glass.
The Gators are back at home Friday (Dec. 2), opening up North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play against Wittenberg University.
