MEADVILLE, Pa. - Kenyon College spoiled the Gators' 2016 home finale, as the Ladies topped Allegheny in three sets in a Saturday matinee at the David V. Wise Center.
Kenyon (15-8), which posted a sparkling .324 hitting percentage for the match and took advantage of five service aces, won by set scores of 25-13, 25-21, and 25-16.
The Ladies took control early in the first set, taking advantage of three Allegheny errors to jump out to leads of 6-1 and 11-3. The Gators temporarily halted the Kenyon momentum, with kills from
Alysha Crowther and
Leah Franzluebbers closing the gap to 12-6, but the Ladies answered right back, scoring 13 of the final 20 points to close out the set one win. Kenyon tallied 15 kills against just three errors, while Allegheny committed six errors against seven kills.
The second set was back-and-forth early on, with neither team enjoying more than a two-point advantage until four straight Kenyon points put the Ladies up 11-6. The Gators answered right back with a 6-0 run, starting with kills from
Alysha Crowther and
Lauryn Long, and wrapped up with a
Kylee Karczewski ace, to jump in front 13-12. The teams would go point-for-point over the next several rallies, with the Gators tying it at 21-all on a quick setter's dump by
Justine Kelly. Allegheny couldn't close it out, however, as Kenyon scored the final four points for the 25-21 decision. The Gators had a balanced offensive attack in the second set, with Kelly, Franzluebbers, and
Alysha Crowther all tallying three kills, while
Terra Schall posted 10 digs.
Behind service aces from Crowther and Long, the Gators jumped out to a 5-2 lead to open up the third set. Kenyon came back to tie it at 4-all, before Franzluebbers turned in a pair of kills and an ace to put the hosts back on top 9-7. A
Hannah Cubarney kill would then give the Gators an 11-10 lead, but Kenyon surged back with six straight points to go up 16-11. The long run proved to be the difference, as Allegheny could get no closer than four points the rest of the way.
Schall had another big day to lead the Gator defense, leading both sides with 18 digs. Offensively, Cubarney tallied a team-leading seven kills for Allegheny, while Franzluebbers finished with six, and Crowther three. Kenyon was paced by the duo of Mackenzie Bruzzio and Alexi Donnelly, who tallied 13 and 10 kills, respectively.
Prior to the match, the Gators honored senior
Emily Adams for her four-year career. A native of Lockport, New York, Adams is a global health studies major and biology minor, and plans to enroll in post-graduate coursework at the University of Buffalo, studying medicine.
The Gators will return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 26, closing out the 2016 conference slate with a 7 p.m. match at Hiram.
