HIRAM, Ohio— The Allegheny College volleyball team fell at North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) foe Hiram College in three sets Wednesday (Oct. 26) evening.
Hiram won the sets 25-14, 25-17 and 25-22.
The Terriers jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the first set as they rode the momentum to a 25-14 win.
Leah Franzluebbers led the Gators with five kills in the opening set.
Terra Schall had a team leading eight digs.
The teams went back-and-forth trading points early in the second set before the Terriers went on a run to take a 10-4 lead. The Terriers advantage grew to as much as ten before the Gators cut the gap to six late in the set. However, it was not enough as the Terriers picked up the win in set two, 25-17.
Hannah Cubarney led the Gators with three kills in the second set while Schall had five digs.
The Gators went on a roll to start the third, winning seven of the first eight points. However, the Terriers start to slowly chip away at the Gator lead, eventually tying the set at 15 points. Over the next several points, neither team was able to find an edge as they found themselves tied at 22. The next three points were won by Hiram as they captured the set 25-22 to win the match.
Cubarney had six kills in the final set while Schall had eight digs.
The Gator offense was led by Cubarney, who finished the game with 13 kills.
Lauryn Long finished with eight kills to go with seven digs. Franzluebbers ended the match with six kills.
Justine Kelley tallied 25 assists for the Gators.
Defensively, Schall ended with 21 digs.
Eden Merkle also hit double digits in digs with 12 while
Kylee Karczewski had nine.
The Gators are back in action this weekend (Oct. 28-29) at the Brockport State Tournament. They will face Saint Lawrence University on Friday before taking on the College of Brockport and the University of Scranton Saturday.
