MEADVILLE, Pa.. – A pair of goals early in the second half pushed Wittenberg University ahead of the Allegheny College women's soccer team, 2-1, this afternoon on Homecoming weekend at the Robertson Athletic Complex.
An evenly played match went the visitors' way thanks to a highlight-reel goal in the 54th minute and a rebound just
four minutes later. Allegheny finally cashed in on some late buildup with a tally in the 86th minute, but couldn't find an equalizer over the final moments of the match.
Taylor Renk provided the Gators an early opportunity, finding space on a two-on-one break after a through pass from
Kayla Dantona. Dantona had her own chance in the 11th minute after a failed clear in the box, but her shot was gloved by the Wittenberg goalkeeper.
The Tigers then tested
Colleen Fleming shortly after, ripping a trio of shots over a span of a minute. Renk had an attempt saved on a counter in the 19th minute, which was followed by another Fleming save on a Shannon Brueck strike.
Renk had another crack at the match's first goal in the 38th minute, generating a strong strike that was just tipped over the crossbar.
Megan Davis made it 1-0 in favor of the visitors, finding the target on a curling shot that ended up in the top left corner of the netting. Leah Soutar doubled the lead
four minutes later with a tap-in on a rebound.
The Gators pushed to get back into the game, eventually cutting the deficit in half with four minutes remaining courtesy of
Kayla Redner.
Jessie Thiessen carried the ball down the right end before sending in a low cross that evaded the Wittenberg defense and found the foot of the rookie Redner.
Fleming made nine saves in the defeat.
In conjunction with Homecoming, Allegheny recognized the 30th anniversary of the Gator women's soccer program with a halftime ceremony that recognized a number of former players from all generations of the team's existence, including former head coaches John Wilcher and
Jeff Groff.
Allegheny returns to non-conference play on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 4:00 p.m. when it travels to Buffalo State.
