Gators Fall 1-0 in Buffalo

BUFFALO, N.Y. - After ceding a goal just moments after halftime, the Gators were unable to net an equalizer in a late push, and were defeated 1-0 at Buffalo State.

For the first 85 minutes of play, Buffalo State (8-1-2) held a commanding edge in possession, as the Bengals held a commanding 26-5 edge in shots.  However, the Gators (3-6-1) tallied three corner kicks and a pair of shots up close over the final five minutse of play, but couldn't capitalize, and were handed their second straight loss.

Senior keeper Colleen Fleming led a strong Gator defensive effort, finishing with nine saves.

The Gator back line was tested early, as the Bengals posted six shots in the first 18 minutes of play, but were kept off the scoreboard thanks to a trio of saves from Fleming.

Midway through the first half, Allegheny had its first scoring chance of the game, but after a Taylor Renk shot was blocked over the end line, a Sarah Donohue effort off the ensuing corner kick went wide, and the game stayed scoreless.

Buffalo State looked primed to take a late first half lead, as they tallied eight shots over the final eight minutes of the period.  However, the Gator defense blocked three of them, one hit the crossbar, and two were saved by Fleming to preserve the scoreless tie at the intermission.

The Bengals finally broke through 80 seconds into the second half, when Tianna Hatch deflected in a cross from 10 yards out to make the score 1-0.  The hosts continued to hold an advantage in possession throughout the second half, and looked primed to score an insurance tally.  In the 80th minute, the Bengals were had a pair of corner kicks and two shots, but one hit the post and another was blocked away by the Gator defense.

After Fleming made her ninth save of the game with six minutes remaining, the Gators looked to rally, keeping the ball deep in Bengal territory.  After two corner kicks in a span of 15 seconds, Jessie Thiessen had a chance up close, but was blocked.  The Gators kept possession, but Renk's shot in close off of a cross with exactly one minute remaining went off the side of the net, signaling the Gators' last chance to tie it.

Allegheny will look to return to winning ways on Saturday, Oct. 8, when it travels to North Coast Athletic Conference foe Denison for a match beginning at 12 noon.
