CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. – A stellar defensive effort helped the Allegheny College men's soccer team draw even, 0-0, with Wabash College in both teams' North Coast Athletic Conference opener this afternoon.
Despite facing 15 shots, Allegheny (1-5-2, 0-0-1 NCAC) was able to hold a potent Wabash (8-0-1, 0-0-1 NCAC) attack scoreless. The Little Giants were averaging 3.5 goals per game going into this match, which was the tied for the 14th highest mark in the nation.
The Gators fired seven shots in regulation with two going on target. Allegheny generated three corner kick opportunities to Wabash's two.
Senior goalkeeper
Jake Pugliese registered the third shutout of his career and first this season with three saves. His biggest save came with 13 seconds remaining in the first overtime as he stopped an attempt from Francisco Trejo to force a second extra frame.
Sophomore forward
Tolossa Hassan led the Gators with four shots and generated one of their two shots on goal. Junior midfielder
Scott Powell registered the other shot on net in the 69th minute.
Allegheny returns to the non-conference slate of its schedule on Tuesday, Sept. 29 when No. 13 Carnegie Mellon comes to town. That match is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. from Frank B. Fuhrer Field.
