MEADVILLE, Pa. – After an offensive-themed first half, visiting Kenyon shut down the Gators over the game's final 30 minutes to earn a 32-17 win in a North Coast Athletic Conference matchup on Homecoming at Frank B. Fuhrer Field.
The first half featured a combined five touchdowns and two field goals between the two teams, before the Lords used a strong ground game to control possession over a second half in which Allegheny was limited to just 28 plays on six possessions.
The loss drops the Gators to 0-4 on the season (0-3 NCAC), while the Lords posted their second win in as many weeks to improve to 2-2 (2-1 NCAC).
Allegheny senior
Tyler Smith continued his strong season for the Gators, scoring both of his team's touchdowns. For the second time this season, Smith gained at least 100 yards receiving and 200 all-purpose yards. He caught seven balls for 110 yards and a touchdown, ran five times for 62 yards and a score, gained 53 yards on two kick returns, and 14 yards on a punt return to finish with 239 all-purpose.
Freshman
Logan Lee and junior
Jon Nigro split time under center, with the former completing six of nine passes for 106 yards and a touchdown, and the latter going 4-for-12 for 46 yards.
After receiving the opening kickoff, Kenyon moved methodically down the field to draw first blood. The Lords' 11-play, 89-yard drive was capped off with an 18-yard touchdown pass on a screen from Jake Bates to Blake Calcei. The ensuing two-point try was good, putting the visitors up 8-0 just four minutes into play.
Forcing a Gator punt after just four plays on the ensuing drive, the Lords again went back to work for another long scoring drive. This time, Kenyon covered 62 yards in 12 plays, with Calcei scoring his second touchdown of the quarter, this one on a goal line plunge. The Lords were again successful on a two-point conversion, going up 16-0 with 2:24 left in the quarter.
The Gator offense would then come to life on its final possession of the first quarter. After a pair of runs covered 12 yards to give the Gators a first down at their own 38, Lee scampered for 16 yards on a keeper to set up first down on the Kenyon 44. Smith then took a handoff and burst through the line for a 43-yard gain, being knocked out of bounds just inside the four, before again taking the handoff and plowing in for the touchdown to cut the deficit to 16-7 with just under 30 seconds left in the quarter.
On the ensuing Kenyon drive, a sack from
Max Sessions forced a Kenyon third-and-long which they could not convert, and Smith's punt return gave the Gators good field position at their own 47. The first two plays of the drive amounted in a loss of three, before Smith fought through heavy coverage to make a 33-yard grab at the Kenyon 25. Two plays later, Lee and Smith hooked up again, this time for a 25-yard touchdown.
Ben Ziolkowski's extra point was good, and the Gators trailed just 16-14 with 11:30 left in the first half.
The Lords countered with another long, methodical drive, eventually setting up first and goal inside the Allegheny five after a 25-yard screen pass from Bates to Rob Meagher. The Allegheny defense would buckle down, with
Nick Murgo coming up with a big stop on third down for a loss of five yards to force Kenyon to settle for a 27-yard field goal to go in front 19-14 with 6:18 remaining until the intermission.
Allegheny's
Tyler Balla returned the ensuing kickoff 47 yards to set up the Gators' next drive at midfield, before Lee hooked up with
Lucas Morton on a 32-yard pass down the sideline. This time, Kenyon's defense would hold, with Ziolkowski hitting a 31-yard field goal to pull the Gators back to within two with just under four minutes left in the half.
The offensive fireworks continued, with Kenyon going to the air to add to their lead at halftime.
Bates opened the ensuing drive with a 38-yard pass to Brian Hunca to set up first down at the Allegheny 13, before the quarterback connected with Ian Bell for a 14-yard touchdown strike to close out the quick 98-second drive and go in front 26-17 with 1:52 left in the second quarter, which is how the score would remain at halftime.
The Gators went three-and-out on their opening possession of the second half, and after taking over at their own 49, Kenyon looked poised to add to their lead. After needing just three plays to advance inside the Allegheny 30, the Lords' offense would stall. Going for it on fourth-and-three, Allegheny's
Joe Wesolowski stopped Calcei just shy of the yard to gain, as the official measurement gave the Gators the ball after the turnover on downs.
The Gator offense couldn't cash in on the momentum, going three-and-out, before Kenyon added to its lead with another quick drive. The Lords opened with back-to-back 15-yard runs by Rob Meagher, before Bates and Hunca hooked up for another 38-yard pass to set up first-and-goal at the nine. Two plays later, the pair would connect again, with Hunca pulling in a six-yard touchdown reception. The Gators'
Travis Thomas blocked the extra point attempt, and Kenyon led 32-17 with 4:30 remaining in the third quarter.
The teams traded punts until midway through the fourth quarter, when the Gators looked to mount a comeback. After a Kenyon field goal attempt went wide right with just over seven minutes left in regulation, Nigro and Smith connected for a 35-yard pass down the sideline to the Kenyon 40, with a Kenyon personal foul taking the ball to the Lords' 25. Three play later, Nigro threw an incompletion just out of the reach of Morton, but the Gators were again the beneficiaries of a Kenyon penalty, as defensive holding gave the hosts first down at the Kenyon 19. The drive would then come to an abrupt end, however, with the Lords' Brandon Byrd intercepting a pass in the corner of the end zone with five minutes left to play.
The interception sealed the game for the Lords, who ran out the clock over the final 4:55 to close out the contest.
For the game, Kenyon doubled up the Gators in time of possession, 39:55 – 20:05, with the Lords running 81 offensive plays to the Gators' 45. The Lords out-gained the Gators 487 yards to 268, with Bates completing 21 of 25 passes for 276 yards, and Meagher running for a game-high 112 yards.
Murgo led Allegheny's defense with 15 tackles, while Wesolowski, Thomas,
Matt Wetzel,
Tristan Rhoades, and
Frank Serbati posted seven apiece. Wetzel added a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
The Homecoming contest closed out a three-game homestand for the Gators, who now will not return to Frank B. Fuhrer Field for nearly a month. They return to action next Saturday, Oct. 3, when they travel to NCAC foe Oberlin for a 3 p.m. contest.
