ERIE, Pa. – A late goal in the 89th minute doomed the Allegheny College men's soccer team this evening as it fell to Penn State Behrend, 4-3, from Behrend Field.
Allegheny (1-4-1, 0-0 NCAC) battled back from falling behind 2-0 in the opening 20 minutes and held a 3-2 after 62 minutes, but Penn State Behrend (5-1-1, 0-0 AMCC) responded in the 69th minute to tie it and buried the game-winner with 1:31 remaining in the contest.
The Lions struck first exactly two minutes in with a goal from Christian Harrington. The hosts doubled their advantage 18 minutes later when Anthony Crivelli made the scoresheet.
The Gators began their comeback in the 52nd minute when Penn State Behrend scored an own goal. Five minutes later it was junior forward
Izaak Miller celebrating for the second straight match as he slotted home a chance from inside the box.
Allegheny took the lead in the 62nd minute when junior defender
Aaron Donahoe fired a low shot to the right corner just past Lion goalkeeper Colton Smith from six yards out. Classmate
Liam McNamee was credited with the assist on the tally.
After a foul in the box in the 69th minute, Harrington went to the penalty kick area in hopes to knotting the match up at 3. He succeeded in doing so, giving him a brace on the evening.
The Gators gained a good chance in the 87th minute when sophomore forward
Bryce Evans stood over the ball for a corner kick. When nothing came of it however, the Lions countered and buried the game-winner as Nick Stewart headed it over Allegheny goalkeeper
Jake Pugliese.
Penn State Behrend held edges in shots (11-7) and shots on goal (5-4). The Gators generated two more corner kick opportunities than the hosts at 9-7.
Miller is now on a three-match point streak, tallying two goals and two assists during the stretch.
Allegheny continues its five-match road trip on Wednesday, Sept. 23 at 7:00 p.m. when takes on Mount Union.
