Turnovers Costly in Soggy Home Opener

MEADVILLE, Pa. - Visiting Wooster forced six Allegheny turnovers and then held off a late Allegheny comeback attempt, as the Fighting Scots spoiled the Gators home opener with a 28-13 victory in a persistent downpour at Frank B. Fuhrer Field..

For the second consecutive week, the Gators saw their opponent ride a persistent run game, as the Fighting Scots ran the ball 52 times for 204 yards and two touchdowns. Allegheny junior quarterback Jon Nigro completed 10 passes for 106 yards, including fourth quarter touchdown passes to John McFarland and Tyler Smith, but the Gators struggled on the ground, netting just 19 yards while losing four fumbles.

The loss drops the Gators to 0-2 overall, and 0-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference, while Wooster evens its record to 1-1 (1-0 NCAC).

After receiving the opening kickoff, the Gators' picked up a pair of first downs on their opening drive, aided by a pair of Wooster penalties, but saw the possession end abruptly on their first lost fumble of the night at their own 30 yard line.

An unsportsmanlike penalty following the fumble recovery moved the ball back to the 46 yardline, but the Gators then committed a costly foul of their own, with a late hit to the quarterback setting up a Wooster first down at the Gator 25.  The Scots then went to the ground on six striaght plays, setting up first and goal inside the seven, before quarterback David Smith connected with Tyson Vogel for a four-yard touchdown pass to go in front 7-0 with just under nine mnutes to play in the quarter.

After the teams traded punts over the next three possessions, the Fighting Scots embarked on a lengthy drive in the closing minutes of the first stanza.  They picked up three straight first downs to open the drive, before the Allegheny defense clamped down.  On second down, Colten Buzard and Matt Wetzel teamed up to drop Smith for a three-yard loss, and the Scots would then come up short on third down, sending out the field goal unitl.  Wooster's 44-yard attempt had plenty of distance but sailed wide right, and the Gators took over at their own 25 to close out the first quarter.

Quarterback Logan Lee opened the second quarter with a 16-yard completion to shifty freshman Tyler Balla to set the ball up at midfield, followed by a six-yard pass to McFarland.  However, as was the case on their opening trip of the first quarter, the drive would end in a lost fumble, with Wooster taking over at its own 35.

Each of the next four drives would end in punts, before the Gators committed their third turnover with a fumble as the result of a Stephen McKinney sack at their own 27 yardline.  Wooster would again make the Gators pay for the miscue, taking advantage of the short field to score four plays later on a 22-yard pass from Smith to Vogel to make the score 14-0 just before the intermission.

Both Wooster and Allegheny traded punts to open the second half, before Wooster added onto its lead after putting together a lengthy 15-play, 74-yard drive to go up 21-0 with 5:50 left in the third quarter on a five yard run by Russell Boston.  The drive lasted nearly six minutes, and the Fighting Scots almost exclusively used the run game, as 13 of the 15 plays were on the ground, covering 56 yards.

The Gators answered with a lengthy drive of their own, highlighted by a screen pass from Nigro to Smith that covered 28 yards and took the ball to the Wooster 32.  A horse-collar penalty on the Scots advanced the ball to the Wooster 22, but a holding call on the Gators would set up second-and-20 at the Wooster 33.  After a five-yard scramble by Nigro made it third and fifteen, the quarterback would find Nick Deichler with a screen pass over the middle, and the senior tailback battled for 10 yards to make it fourth and five at the Wooster 18.  Gonig for it on fourth down, the Gators were again victimized by a turnover, with a fumble ending the drive at the Wooster 20.with 2:34 left in the third quarter.

Allegheny's defense forced a three-and-out on the ensuing Wooster drive, with Lucas Morton returning the punt 15 yards to set up first down at midfield.  The possession would be short-lived, and ended in the Gators' fifth turnover of the night, this one a second down interception.  Wooster couldn't capitalize on the miscue, giving the ball back on another punt that went into the end zone to give Allegheny the ball on its own 20 to end the third quarter.

Allegheny's first trip of the fourth quarter was short-lived, but Chris Bourne's punt would turn momentum the way of the Gators for the first time on the evening.  Bourne blasted a booming 60-yard punt that was downed at the Wooster 10-yardline.  Six plays later, the Fighting Scots were forced to punt, but the snap was mishandled, and the Gators' Jon Scroxton, who was charging in for the block, pounced on the loose ball at the Wooster 14.

The Gators would make the Fighting Scots pay just one play later, when Nigro opened the drive by finding McFarland over the middle for a 14-yard touchdown.  The extra point kick was no good, making the score 21-6 with 11:20 left in regulation.

The Fighting Scots made the Gators pay for yet another turnover in the closing minutes of the fourth quarter.  After picking off their second interception of the half, Wooster needed just two plays to make it a 28-6 game, when Boston broke through the line for a 35-yard touchdown run with 2:55 left in regulation.

On the ensuing kickoff, Balla made an impressive 41-yard return, breaking a number of tackles to set the ball up at midfield.  Three plays later, he caught a 15-yard pass from Nigro to convert a third-and-10, before a defensive pass interference penalty on a pass to Morton in the end zone set up first down at the Wooster 14.  Nigro then hooked up with Smith for a 14-yard touchdown pass, with Zach Bednarowicz's extra point making the score 28-13 with 1:40 left.

It was as close as the Gators would get, however, as the ensuing on-side kick attempt went out of bounds at midfield.  Wooster then took to the victory formation to chew up the final 90 seconds, and seal the win.

Wooster ended the night with a 304-169 advantage in total offense, with 204 of the yards coming on the ground.  Antonio Bailey led the Fighting Scots with an even 100 yards on 22 carries, with Boston adding 95 yards on 15 attempts.  The Fighting Scots limited the Gators to just 19 rushing yards, aided by five sacks that accounted for a loss of 31 yards.

Allegheny will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 12, hosting #9 Wabash at Frank B. Fuhrer Field in the second game of a rare three-week homestand.
