Julian's Shutout Gem Sends Gators to NCAC Tournament

MEADVILLE, Pa. – Sophomore Robert Julian threw a complete game three-hitter, striking out a career-high seven batters as Allegheny clinched a trip to Chillicothe, Ohio for the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) tournament with a 3-0 win over Denison in game three of the NCAC Crossover series at the Robertson Complex.

Julian only allowed a pair of Big Red runners into scoring position, retiring nine consecutive batters from the fourth to sixth innings before retiring the last four batters in order to send the Gator bench into a frenzy.  The Gators rebounded from a game one loss for the third consecutive year, using the momentum from sophomore Corey Keenan's strong outing in game two to complete the comeback and clinch their third trip to Chillicothe in as many years.

Allegheny scored all the runs needed for Julian in the third inning, as sophomore Patrick Orr opened the scoring, finishing 1-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI as junior Joe Killian stayed white hot during the crossover series, batting 1-for-3 with a big two-run single in the third.  Sophomore Robert DiMaggio scattered a pair of hits for the Gators, scoring a run as freshman Tyler Wagner, who hit a momentum-shifting grand slam in game two, led off the Gator offense with the team's first hit of the game in the third.

Senior Zach Gray made the first defensive highlight for the Gators, making a sliding snag on a ball destined for the outfield grass to jumpstart a 4-6-3 double play before shaking off a double by stranding Denison's Charlie Apfelback.  Allegheny used the big defensive inning as momentum heading into the bottom of the third, as the Gators would plate three runs on four hits to take the early lead.

Back-to-back hits by Wagner and DiMaggio put runners on the corner with no outs in the inning, as Orr cashed in the Gators' first run with a scalding single to the shortstop Jack Blanchard, opening the scoring for the decisive game three by driving Wagner home.  Killian laced a two-run single up the middle, plating DiMaggio and Orr and spotting Julian a three-run lead heading into the fourth.

Julian took Allegheny's three runs in the third and took control of the game, stringing together his incredible, three-inning run from the fourth to sixth innings before a leadoff double by the Big Red in the seventh.  Julian responded in kind, forcing a pair of groundouts and a strikeout to leave the runner stranded and the 3-0 lead intact.

Denison put another runner aboard in the eighth with two outs, but Julian forced a first pitch pop out to end the threat.  In the ninth, Julian kicked off the inning by striking out the first batter, as sophomore Jacob Shick helped the Gator hurler to the complete game by snagging a pair of sharply hit ground balls to end the game, as the Gator bench erupted as the final out hit the glove of first baseman Wagner, piling on Julian at the mound as Allegheny celebrated its third consecutive trip to the NCAC Tournament.

Allegheny will join Wooster and Oberlin as NCAC East division representatives to clinch a spot in the tournament, as Wooster swept Wabash on Saturday and Oberlin upended the West Division champion DePauw Tigers in a hard-fought three game series to advance.  Ohio Wesleyan emerged from a series with Kenyon as the lone NCAC West team to make the tournament, which will begin on May 7th.
