Early Leads Fall, Gators Eliminated from NCAC Tourney

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio – A 3-0 lead dissipated in the late stages of Allegheny's North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Tournament opener, as the Oberlin Yeomen stunned the Gators, 7-6, on Thursday afternoon at VA Memorial Stadium.  Ohio Wesleyan would then plate six runs in the sixth inning, eliminating the Gators, 10-4, in the squad's season finale on Thursday evening.

Against the Yeomen, senior Zach Gray and junior Joe Killian drove in a team-high three runs each, as Gray additionally matched freshman Dan Bonnett with a pair of runs scored.  Gray finished the game batting 3-for-5, jump-starting the Gator offense with a two run home run to deep center field, sparking the squad to their early lead.  Killian, Bonnett and sophomore Jacob Shick each finished the game batting 2-for-5.

Sophomore Chase Boyer put the Gators in position with a strong outing on the mound, hurling 6.0 innings of work, striking out three while only allowing two runs on six hits.  Leading, 3-0, after five innings, Oberlin began the rally by plating a pair of runs in the second before striking for four in the seventh, adding a crucial insurance run in the ninth to send the Gators into the late elimination game against Ohio Wesleyan.

In the first a single to second by Bonnett was followed by Gray's moonshot to center field, giving the Gators the first salvo in this epic conference championship clash.  Allegheny scored its third run in the bottom of the third inning, as a double down the left field line that clanked off the wall was followed by a two-out single to center by Killian, plating Bonnett and giving the Gators a three-run lead.

Oberlin's rally began in the sixth as a two-RBI single by Oberlin's Mitch Novak put the Yeomen on the board.  A sacrifice fly by Benjamin Whitener kicked off the game-changing seventh, as a triple down the left field line by Ryan Bliss put the Yeomen ahead, 6-3, in a four-run inning that featured only one hit, two walks and a pair of hit battsmen.

After Oberlin added an insurance run in the top of the ninth, Allegheny staged one final attempt at a rally in the bottom of the final inning.  After Bonnett and Gray reached base with two outs in the inning, a double to left center by Killian brought the Gators to within a run.  But Oberlin was able to shut down the Allegheny comeback by forcing the final out after Killian, the potential game-tying run, advanced to third on a single by Shick.

In game two, Allegheny would again jump out to an early lead with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning, but the Battling Bishops came racing back with two in the first, another pair of runs in the second to take a 4-2 lead.  Shick, senior Adam Bronson and junior Matt Sardini each picked up a pair of hits, with Shick driving in a team-high two runs against the Battling Bishops.

A double by Shick sliced the Ohio Wesleyan in half, plating Killian and making the game 4-3.  Junior Matt Sardini tied the ballgame in the sixth inning, making the Ohio Wesleyan pitching staff pay for a lead-off walk to sophomore Robert DiMaggio by cracking a double into right center field, bringing home DiMaggio and knotting the contest up at 4-4.

The Battling Bishops plated six runs on six hits in the bottom of the sixth, taking a 10-4 lead while keeping the Gators off the scoreboard down the stretch.  The Gators stranded 12 runners on base throughout the duration of Thursday's elimination game, as Ohio Wesleyan ended the Gators' season with two runners on scoring position in the ninth inning.

Allegheny closes the 2015 season with a 23-16 record, including a 16-5 mark over the final 30 days of the season.  Picking up conference sweeps over Hiram and Oberlin, the Gators finished the NCAC slate with a 14-5 record, the highest conference win total for the program since the 1999 season.
