MEADVILLE, Pa.— Sophomore
Shea Beaumont's first career home run highlighted an otherwise rough game for the Gators, as Allegheny saw its 10-game winning streak come to an end to Penn State-Behrend, 12-4, on Tuesday afternoon at Robertson Complex.
In the first of seven Gator home games this week; Allegheny was plagued by six errors, as the Lions scored nine unearned runs against the home squad. Beaumont's homer came on an 0-1 pitch in the bottom of the eighth inning, as he launched a high fastball over the 320-foot mark in right field, going against a blustering wind blowing in from the outfield to give the Gators a late spark. Beaumont finished the contest 2-for-2, driving in a run in the ninth.
Beaumont led the Gators in hitting, although several other members of the squad also scattered hits, although a determined Lions' pitching staff held the Gators in check for a majority of the contest. Seniors
Zach Gray and
Ben Murray alongside freshman
Tyler Wagner each picked up hits, as senior
Adam Bronson scored a pair of runs.
Freshman
Chase Davis nearly picked up the first home run of his Gator career, but settled for a deep double to right to lead off the top of the ninth. Sophomore
Patrick Orr took the loss, but struck out seven batters as freshman
Kyle O'Connell struck out four.
Behrend plated one run in the top of the first to kick off the scoring, taking advantage of a pair of Gator errors. Fielding miscues again came back to damage the Gators in the third, as a pair of unearned runs were allowed to cross the plate in the third inning, giving Behrend the 3-1 lead before the visitors managed a run in the fourth.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Gators put two runners aboard after a Bonnett was plunked on the leg and Killian reached on the first Behrend error of the contest, but the Gators were unable to dent the Lions' lead, as the next three batters were retired in order to eliminate the Allegheny threat.
Four runs in the top of the sixth by Behrend increased the lead to seven, as Allegheny was able to claw a run in the bottom of the frame. Bronson forced a 3-1 walk, scoring on a short single to left by Murray for the squad's second run of the game. Behrend's ninth run came in the eighth, as Allegheny answered with Beaumont's rocket in the bottom of the frame.
Penn State-Behrend closed out their scoring with three runs in the ninth, as Allegheny was unable to come back against the Lions' pitching, only scoring one run in the bottom of the frame.
Allegheny will next battle Mount Union in a doubleheader set to commence at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22nd before welcoming Kenyon to Robertson Complex for a four-game, NCAC East series that will begin at 12 p.m. on Saturday, April 25th and conclude the following day.
