MEADVILLE, Pa. – Behind a dominant performance on the mound by sophomore
Zach Hale, Allegheny edged Mount Union 3-1 in non-conference action at the Robertson Athletic Complex.
Hale earned his first win of the season, as he threw seven shutout innings and surrendered just two hits while striking out three, facing just two batters over the minimum.
Cullen Flaherty's two-run single in the fourth provided all of the run support Hale would need, while
Robert DiMaggio's RBI double in the sixth tacked on some insurance as the Gators won their final non-conference game of the regular season.
Hale was strong from the start, retiring the side in order in the first, before getting a tailor-made 4-6-3 double play to erase the Radiers' first runner of the game and end the second inning.
The Gators had a pair of chances to break through early. With two outs in the bottom of the first,
Joe Killian walked and
Jacob Shick singled, but both were left stranded after Raiders' starter West Kemp ended the frame with a strikeout. In the second,
Ben Murray and
Tyler Wagner opened the frame with back-to-back singles, and each moved into scoring position after a wild pitch.
Shea Beaumont followed by scorching line drive, but it was right at Mount Union second baseman Sean Mohney, who was able to double off Wagner at second. Kemp again pitched out of trouble by closing the inning with a strikeout and preserving the scoreless tie.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Gators finally were able to get on the board. With one out, Murray drew a walk, before Wagner came through with his second single of the game. They each moved into scoring position on a passed ball, and with two outs, Flaherty dumped a base hit into left field to bring both runners home and give the Gators a 2-0 lead.
Two innings later, the hosts added an insurance run. With one out Beaumont walked, and two batters later, crossed the plate with the Gators' third run of the day after DiMaggio cracked a two-out double to the fence in right.
Meanwhile, Hale continued to cruise, allowing just one base runner between the fourth and sixth innings. In the top of the seventh, the Raiders' James Weber reached on an error with one out, but Hale got his second ground ball double play of the game to end the inning and close out his outing. The righty needed just 90 pitches to get through his seven innings of work.
The Raiders got on the board in the top of the eighth, as Mohney led off with a double and scored on an RBI groundout from Tyler Simcox. Mount Union again threatened in the ninth, drawing a pair of walks, but Stascak closed the door by getting a ground out to Beaumont at first to seal his second save of the season, and the Gators' 10th win in their last 11 games.
For the game, Allegheny out-hit Mount Union 7-3, led by Wagner's 3-for-4 performance. Murray reached base twice and scored a run, posting a single and a walk, while Shick went 1-for-3 with a walk and stolen base.
One of four pitchers to work for Mount Union (18-12), Kemp threw four innings and took the loss, allowing two runs on five hits in four innings, with four walks and seven strikeouts.
Allegheny will now close out the regular season with a four-game weekend series against Kenyon. The Gators and Lords will open the set with a 1 p.m. Senior Day doubleheader on Saturday, before again meeting for a pair of games on Sunday beginning at noon.
