Offense Ushers Allegheny to Spring Training Victory

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Gator offense maintained the momentum from Sunday's doubleheader, logging 17 total hits en route to a 13-5 triumph over Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham on Monday afternoon at the Lake Myrtle Sports Complex.

The top three of the Gators' lineup were immensely efficient, as the starters went a combined 8-of-13, scoring seven of the squad's 13 runs.  Sophomore Robert DiMaggio went 2-for-4, driving in a team-high three runs while scoring two, while senior Zach Gray went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored.  Sophomore Jacob Shick continued his strong start to the season, going 3-for-5, scoring a team-high three runs while driving in a pair for the Blue and Gold.

Senior Adam Bronson, hitting cleanup, batted 2-for-4, knocking in a pair of runs while also making several key defensive plays to swing the momentum towards the Gators.  Juniors Joe Killian and Matt Sardini alongside sophomore Shea Beaumont each went 2-for-3, as freshman Dan Bonnett scored a pair of runs.

On the mound, sophomore Patrick Orr scored his first win of the year, hurling 5.0 innings and striking out five batters.  Gray, Bronson and Killian additionally each stole a base for the aggressive Gators offense.

Allegheny kicked off the game with four runs in the bottom of the first inning.  DiMaggio singled up the middle to lead off the Gator batting order, as back-to-back singles by Shick and Bronson drove in the leadoff batter to give the Gators an early, 1-0 lead.

A single to left by Killian after a wild pitch put Shick and Bronson in scoring position scored the sophomore second baseman, as a double steal plated Bronson to put the team up, 3-0.  On the opening pitch of his first at bat, Beaumont laced a liner down the left field line, ending up with a double to score Killian, ending the Gators' scoring with four runs in the first inning.

The Devils scored three runs in the top of the third, holding the Gators scoreless in the fourth.  Orr forced an inning-ending double play in the top of the fourth, setting the stage for the Gators in the bottom of the frame. Beaumont was hit by pitch, to lead off the inning, moving over to second on a wild pitch before Bonnett reached base on an error to put runners on the corners with only one out.

DiMaggio launched a 2-2 pitch to the warning track in center field, allowing Beaumont and Bonnett to score, giving the Gators a 6-3 advantage.  Shick followed up with a sharp-hit grounder back to the pitcher, scoring DiMaggio for another run.  A sacrifice fly by Killian and single to right center by Sardini closed out the Allegheny fourth, as the squad scored five runs on three hits.

In the bottom of the fifth, DiMaggio struck again, hitting a sacrifice fly to bring in Bonnett, who laced a triple to right center earlier in the inning, gave the Gators their 10th run.  Orr exited the game in the top of the fifth, bringing in freshman Jameson Murray, who struck out a pair of batters in the inning.  Bronson gunned out a FDU-Florham runner attempting to steal third in the top of the seventh, allowing the Gators to escape the seventh with only one run allowed.

Back-to-back hits by Sardini and Beaumont started the Gators' seventh, as a sacrifice bunt by junior Hayden Smith put both runners in scoring position.  A wild pitch scored Sardini to increase the Allegheny lead.  After sophomore Robert Julian pitched a scoreless eighth, Allegheny furthered the gap with three consecutive hits, highlighted by a triple down the right field line by Shick that scored Gray, who singled to lead off the inning.  A single to left by Bronson scored Shick, putting the Gators up, 13-5.  Julian came back out to work in the top of the ninth, striking out the final two batters to clinch Allegheny's second win of the season.

The Gators will next battle Presidents' Athletic Conference member Washington & Jefferson on Tuesday at 2 :30 p.m. at the Lake Myrtle facility before traveling to Winter Haven for a doubleheader against Oswego State that is slated to start at 12 p.m. on Wednesday.
