MEADVILLE, Pa. – Reigning Allegheny Male Athlete of the Week
Daniel Szekely scored his second goal in as many games in the 83rd minute to grab the late equalizer in the Gators' 2-2 tie with Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) foe Grove City on Thursday evening at Frank B. Fuhrer Field.
Senior
Axel Monzon assisted on both Allegheny goals, as sophomore
Nick Dias set the tone early with a score in the 16th minute, his first goal of the season. Junior
Jake Pugliese made five stops in net while freshman
Tolossa Hassan threatened for the Gators on several occasions, placing a pair of shots on target.
The Gators controlled the pace early in the contest, generating several high-quality chances off of corner kicks in the first 10 minutes. Dias cashed in for the first goal of his sophomore campaign after a well-placed ball to the far sideline from Monzon. With several yards of open space, Dias ran unopposed to the net, firing a shot past the outreaching hand of Grove City goalkeeper Ben Weaver, knocking the attempt off of the far post and in for the first goal of the evening.
Grove City would end the half with a 2-1 lead after goals in the 22nd and 36th minute, while the Gators were held at bay for the remainder of the opening stanza. The Wolverines maintained the momentum in the second half, turning aside an Allegheny corner attempt in the 59th minute.
Freshman
Bryce Evans started shifting momentum for the Gators with a shot on goal in the 79th minute. The equalizer was jump-started by a save from Pugliese, which resulted in a counter for the Gators. Monzon rocketed a shot towards the Grove City goal that clanged off of the post, only to be corralled by Szekely and sent into the back of the net for the game-tying score. In overtime, both teams traded opportunities with neither squad able to tally the game-winner before the final horn sounded for the tie.
Allegheny will next travel to Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania on Saturday, Sept. 6 for a 7 p.m. tilt against the Geneva Golden Tornadoes.
