Volleyball Finishes Gator Invitational Unbeaten

MEADVILLE, Pa. – All-Tournament selections for senior Catherine Kasianowicz and junior Taylor Samuel capped an immensely impressive weekend for the Allegheny Volleyball squad, as the Gators picked up their fifth and sixth consecutive wins over Mount Aloysius and Manhattanville, 3-0 and 3-1, respectively, on Saturday at the David V. Wise Center.

Kasianowicz concluded her final Gator Invitational with a pair of 15-dig performances to usher the Gators to a 4-0 mark in their annual home tournament, adding seven service aces.  Samuel scored 10 kills against Mount Aloysius before tying her career mark of 19, set last weekend against Shenandoah, with a .400 hitting percentage against Manhattanville.

Junior Sarah Swartz concluded the afternoon with 12 total kills, scoring six in each contest, while fellow third year Julia Weeks racked up 13, including eight in the second game against the Valiants.  Freshman Justine Kelly averaged 35.5 assists per game on Saturday, falling two shy of her season high with 46 assists against Manhattanville.  The Gators scored 15 aces against Manhattanville, including four from Kelly and freshman counterpart Christa Cash, while Allegheny first years Terra Schall and Kylee Karczewski picked up 16 and 12 digs, respectively, to contribute to the Gators' team total of 65.  Allegheny racked up seven total team blocks against the Mounties, as Swartz logged four block assists to compliment a pair of assisted blocks for both Kelly and fellow freshman Leah Franzluebbers.  Swartz, Samuel and Franzluebbers tacked on two more block assists each against Manhattanville.

Under serve from Schall, the Gators opened the match against Mount Aloysius with seven unanswered points, ultimately taking a 15-4, first set lead en route to a 25-14 win in the opening stanza.  Kasianowicz sparked the Gators in game two with five unanswered points to start the set, helping the Gators pick up an identical, 25-14 win in set two.  After Allegheny leapt out to a 7-3 lead in set three, the Mounties battled back to within one at 11-10 before the Gators closed the match on a 15-6 run, including seven unanswered points to end the set and match in favor of the Blue and Gold.

Manhattanville scored 10 of the last 12 points of the first set to pick up an early, 1-0 lead on the Gators with a 25-21, first set victory.  The Gators responded in definitive fashion, erupting for a 15-3 lead in the second set which resulted in a 25-8, set-tying second game win.  The Gators kept the momentum up in the third set, taking a 9-2 lead en route to a 25-13 win before closing out the match with a 25-19 fourth set victory.

The Gators will next travel to Grove City for a 6:30 matchup against the Wolverines on Tuesday, Sept. 16 before kicking off the 2014 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) season against Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday, Sept. 20.
