Tartans Blank Gators in Saturday Clash

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – A late first half goal created from an unfortunate bounce kicked off the scoring for the Carnegie Mellon Tartans in an eventual 3-0 triumph over the Gator men's soccer squad on Saturday afternoon.

In the 40th minute, the Tartans were awarded a free kick, resulting in an opportunity that deflected off of a member of the Allegheny defense and into the back of the net for the first goal of the afternoon.  Goals in the 47th and 86th minute provided insurance to help the Tartans to the win.

The Gators held a decisive, 7-2 advantage in corner kicks, including five chances in the second half, while rattling off 10 total shots, including eight in the final stanza.  Senior Daniel Szekely and freshman Bryce Evans each placed a shot on target, while junior Jake Pugliese finished the contest with four total saves in the loss.

The Allegheny offense was held at bay for the beginning of the first half, as the first strong Allegheny chance developed in the 19th minute on a corner kick by senior Axel Monzon.  After sophomore Zach Stryker sent a shot wide in the 20th minute, the Gators were subdued once again until a corner opportunity in the 36th minute that resulted in a shot over the crossbar by freshman Tolossa Hassan.  The Tartans used the own goal to take a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

Evans fired the Gators' first shot on target in the 53rd minute after Carnegie Mellon had taken a 2-0 advantage.  Monzon maintained the pressure with a corner opportunity in the 54th.  After a shot from freshman Izaak Miller went wide in the 57th was followed by a corner kick in the same minute, the Gators were once again held at bay for nearly 10 minutes, as the next corner was not awarded until the 67th.  The Tartan defense was able to hold the Gators scoreless until the end of the contest, adding their third insurance goal in the 86th minute.

The Gators will look to rebound on Tuesday, Sept. 16 against Baldwin Wallace, the first of two home matches on tap for the Gators next week.  Allegheny will welcome Penn State-Behrend for a 7:30 matchup on Sept. 19.
