MEADVILLE, Pa. – Behind a pair of goals from sophomore
Scott Powell, the Allegheny Gators remained unbeaten at home with a 2-1 win over Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) opponent Baldwin Wallace at Frank B. Fuhrer Field.
Powell kept the momentum from his first collegiate goal, a game-winner against La Roche in Allegheny's last contest at Frank B. Fuhrer Field, with goals in the 28th and 44th minute to vault the Gators to their second win at home in the three matches played at the Robertson Complex.
Junior goalkeeper
Jake Pugliese made six saves in net as the Allegheny defense halted a Yellow Jacket offense that procured 13 shots, including seven shots on target, and three corners. Freshman
Izaak Miller was credited with the assist on Powell's first goal to earn his first collegiate point.
After Baldwin Wallace found the back of the net in the 23rd minute, Allegheny began to gather momentum for an equalizer. In the 19th minute, sophomore
Zach Stryker took a hard shot from 10 yards out that sailed high of the goal. Powell was able to find the back of the net for the first time on a strong pass in the box from Miller, who sent a strong ground pass just outside of the box that found Powell waiting for the equalizer.
Allegheny kept the pressure on during the final third of the first half, sparked by a shot from senior
Alejandro Weil just outside of the box that went over the crossbar. In the 44th minute, the second of back-to-back corners from junior
Alex Marks found Wach inside the box, who headed the ball towards the Baldwin Wallace net. After a Yellow Jacket defender deflected the attempt, Powell, standing on the base line, launched the ball into the net on the far side to give Allegheny a 2-1 lead heading into halftime.
In the second half, the Gators were able to contain the Yellow Jackets, who attempted seven shots in the second stanza. Miller was able to develop several strong opportunities, including a breakaway in the 85th minute, but the Allegheny defense was able to hold Baldwin Wallace without a second half goal to clinch the victory.
The Gators will return to Frank B. Fuhrer Field on Friday, Sept. 19 to take on Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) opponent Penn State-Behrend at 7:30 p.m.
