First Half Strike Vaults Gators over Redhawks

MEADVILLE, Pa. – A first half goal from sophomore Scott Powell, the first of his career, lifted the Gators past the La Roche Redhawks, 1-0, on a rainy Wednesday evening at Frank B. Fuhrer Field.

In the 36th minute, freshman Tolossa Hassan placed a strong ball inside the box for the Gators.  Seeing the opportunity, Powell placed a shot on target with the top of his foot.  The ball ricocheted off of the crossbar, landing behind the goal line to give the Gators the first half lead.

Junior Jake Pugliese made three saves in net for the Gators, as the Allegheny defense withstood nine shots from the Redhawks.

The Gators were able to threaten early, as freshman Bryce Evans had a shot blocked off of a corner kick in the 7th minute.  Puglese made his first save of the contest in the 17th minute, as senior Stefano Wach placed a long-distance shot on target in the 25th minute.  The next great chance for the Gators was Powell's goal, giving the Gators the early advantage.

In the second half, Pugliese stopped a hard-hit shot in the 62nd minute, as the Gators were able to contain several impressive offensive opportunities from the Redhawk offense.  Hassan was able to develop a breakaway opportunity in the 82nd minute, but Redhawk goalkeeper Spencer Wolfe was able to smother the opportunity.

A large rainstorm drenched the turf in the waning moments, as Allegheny was able to stop a final onslaught from La Roche in the last minutes until the final buzzer.

Allegheny will next face Carnegie Mellon on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 1 p.m.  The Gators will return home on Tuesday, Sept. 16, when they battle Baldwin Wallace at 7:30 p.m.
