Stunning Comeback Catapults Gators to Road Win

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Senior Daniel Szekely capped an incredible comeback for the Allegheny men's soccer squad on Saturday afternoon, scoring in the 95th minute to upend the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) Tigers, 2-1, in overtime to close the squad's Doug May Memorial Tournament slate at Tiger Stadium.

Szekely's goal was made possible due to the efforts of seniors Thomas Richter, who scored the game-tying goal with 59 seconds remaining and the Gators trailing, 1-0.  Fellow fourth year Cameron Olson picked up his second assist of the weekend on Richter's goal, while freshman Tolossa Hassan collected his first collegiate point on the assist to Szekely's game-winner.  Sophomore Jake Pugliese made four saves for the Gators, going the distance in his second start of the season.

"Overall I was pleased with the effort in the second half, we actually got into a rhythm and became very dangerous and finally got the equalizer in the final minute of the game," commented head coach Angelo Panzetta.  "We were the fresher team heading into overtime and were able to pick up the game winner.  We have a lot of things to work on, the players know that, but it was good to win a game in that fashion."

RIT found the back of the net in the 38th minute to take the early lead, holding the Gators without a shot in the opening stanza.  Olson placed a shot on target to kick-start the second half, forcing Tiger goalkeeper Bailey Reid to make a save in the 54th minute.  Senior Axel Monzon kept the pressure on the Tigers, placing a shot on goal in the 59th.

Richter's heroics began on a counterattack in the waning moments of the contest, as a run down the left side by Olson resulted in a quality cross that was deflected and found its way to Richter.  The senior powered home the equalizer from 20 yards out, sending the contest into overtime tied, 1-1.

The Gators controlled the pace in overtime, as Hassan took a shot in the 92nd minute to help set the tone.  Hassan then served the ball into the box, allowing Szekely to convert the goal and end the contest in the 96th minute, giving the Gators the victory.

Allegheny will play at Frank B. Fuhrer Field for the first time this season on Thursday, when the Gators welcome Grove City College for a 7:30 p.m. bout.
