Box Score CHILLICOTHE, Ohio – Four first inning runs provided the difference for DePauw University as the Tigers eliminated the Allegheny Gators from the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Tournament, 9-3, on Friday afternoon at V.A. Memorial Stadium.
Senior
Mike Pezzone and freshman
Kyle Emerson tied for the team lead with two hits apiece, while senior
Kyle Davis along with juniors
Eric Weyant and
Zach Gray each drove in a run for the Gators. Freshman
Robert DiMaggio assisted an early offensive outburst for the Gators, scoring a run in his NCAC Tournament debut.
Three extra base hits, including a three-run home run by DePauw left fielder Cory Meixner, put the Tigers up, 4-0, in the opening frame. After DePauw (20-19) jumped out to a 6-0 lead after three innings, the Allegheny offense awakened in the bottom of the third inning, jumpstarted by Emerson, who led off the frame with a single up the middle.
After a walk to DiMaggio and a sacrifice bunt by senior
Shane Regel, Weyant sent a 3-2 pitch through the right side, scoring Emerson and putting the Gators (27-14) on the board. Davis followed with a RBI-groundout to first, allowing DiMaggio to cross the plate for the second run of the afternoon for the Blue and Gold.
Emerson picked up his second hit of the afternoon with two outs in the fourth, as Pezzone sent a one-out single to center in the sixth, but neither base hit was able to produce a run as DePauw starting pitcher Jack Peck, who finished the contest with a complete game outing, holding the Gators to seven hits while striking out six and forcing 15 ground outs.
Allegheny scored a run in the eighth on a two-out single through the right side by Gray to score Davis, who with Pezzone picked up singles earlier in the inning. Regel forced a 3-2 walk with two outs in the ninth inning, but a groundout on the next batter ended the Gators' NCAC Tournament run.
