Allegheny Offense Highlights Split with No. 16 Case

Senior Mike Pezzone launched a bases-clearing double in game two, helping the Gators to a 13-3 win and split with No. 16 Case on Tuesday afternoon.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MEADVILLE, Pa. – Allegheny closed the 2014 regular season home slate with a split against No. 16 Case Western Reserve on Tuesday at Robertson Complex.   The Gators would upend the Spartans, 13-3, in game two to bounce back from a tough, 5-1 loss in game one.

Senior Mike Pezzone set the tone early for the Gators in the nightcap, finishing 1-for-3 with three RBI in the win.  Junior Zach Gray and sophomore Joe Killian each recorded two hits a piece, while third year Adam Bronson, who was hit by pitch three times, one off the school record, crossed the plate three times to lead the squad.  Allegheny batters were hit six times by Case pitchers, tacking on seven walks to assist the Gator offense.

Junior Steven Ramsdell earned his sixth win of the season, pitching 7.0 innings of work, only allowing three hits and one run while striking out seven.  Senior Kyle Davis took the hard luck loss in game one despite hurling seven strong innings and striking out seven batters.  Junior Eric Weyant drove in fellow third year Ben Murray for the lone Gator run of the first game.

In the nightcap, Pezzone crushed a double to left center field in the bottom of the second, hitting the warning track with the bases loaded to give the Gators an early lead.  The inning was started with Allegheny's first hit of the game, a single to right by Gray.  Bronson was hit by a pitch, as walks to Murray and sophomore Matt Sardini brought in Allegheny's first run of the game before Pezzone's bases-clearing double.  Weyant drove home Pezzone with a grounder to second, giving the Gators a 5-1 advantage at the end of the second.

The senior made a highlight-reel catch in the next inning, laying out to snag a sinking line drive in center field for the inning's first out.  Ramsdell calmed the Case bats, setting the stage for the Gator offense to strike again in the fifth.

Allegheny loaded the bases in the fifth after Davis and Bronson were hit to compliment a single by Killian.  Murray reached on an error by the Spartan first baseman, allowing Killian and Davis to cross the plate.  A single through the left side by Sardini brought Bronson home to put the Gators an 8-1 lead.

The Allegheny bats would come alive once again the following inning, as Davis was hit by pitch for the second consecutive inning before a single to Shick put runners on first and second.  Killian sent a line shot up the middle, corralled by the second baseman that looked to throw out Davis at home, but the ball was not secured at the plate and the run counted.

A double to left by Gray scored Killian and freshman Jacob Shick, the reigning Allegheny Male Athlete of the Week, to improve the Allegheny lead to 11-1.  The Allegheny scoring would end in the eighth on a two-RBI single to left center by freshman Robert DiMaggio, which plated Murray and Bronson to give the Gators their 12th and 13th runs of the ballgame.  Junior Paul Vojtek pitched the final two innings of the contest to close the door on Allegheny's 23rd win of the season.

In the first game, Case plated a run in the top of the inning, but the Gators were able to respond in the bottom of the frame.  Murray was plunked to lead off the Allegheny second before back-to-back singles by Sardini and Weyant brought the junior home to tie the game, 1-1.

Davis and Case starting pitcher John Fortunato spent the next several innings locked in a pitchers' duel, as neither pitcher allowed a run despite placing several threats on base for the opposing team.  Davis fanned three batters in the fourth after a lead off single, a walk and double steal placed two runners in scoring position, striking out the final batter looking on an 0-2 count with the bases loaded.

The senior would face a similar situation in the sixth, facing runners at the corners with two outs, and Davis responded in kind by striking out the final out of the inning, sending the Gators up to bat with the score tied in the bottom of the inning.

Killian launched a double to the warning track in right center on a 2-0 count to put a runner in scoring position with one out in the bottom of the sixth.  Case would respond with four two-out runs in the seventh, taking advantage of a pair of Gator miscues to take a 5-1 lead heading into the bottom of the frame.  Senior Shane Regel would single to center to put a man aboard, but Allegheny was able to maintain the rally as the late Spartans rally resulted in a game one win.

The Gators will next travel to Fredonia, N.Y. for a non-conference bout against State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) member Fredonia State before heading to Wooster, Ohio for a four-game series against North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) East rival Wooster on Apr. 26 and 27.
