Gators Finish Off Weekend Sweep of Kenyon

Kyle Davis had five hits and three RBIs in the Gators' sweep of Kenyon
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 GAMBIER, Ohio - The Allegheny baseball team ran its winning streak to six and sealed a four-game series sweep with a pair of wins at North Coast Athletic Conference foe Kenyon.

Senior Eric Brandt pitched the Gators to a 5-1 victory in the opener, before Allegheny racked 14 hits and took advantage of six Kenyon errors in the nightcap to win 9-3.  The first four-game NCAC sweep of the season for Allegheny, it marked the third  straight conference series win for the Gators (22-7, 10-2 NCAC) and ties them with Wooster atop the league standings.

In game one, Allegheny jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second, as Adam Bronson doubled and was driven home with a two-out single by Matt Sardini.  An inning later, the Gators' Mike Pezzone connected for a solo home run to open up a two-run lead.

Kenyon countered with a single run in the bottom of the third, before the Gators put the game away with a four-run fourth.  Ben Murray led off with a single, and came all the way around to score on a Kyle Davis one-out triple to the fence in right.  After Davis scored on an Eric Weyant RBI groundout, Jacob Shick doubled with two outs, and came home on a Joe Killian base knock.

Brandt pitched through trouble on a number of occasions to make the three-run lead stand up, as the Lords stranded seven baserunners, including six over the final three innings.  Brandt escaped a one-out, two-on jam in the sixth by forcing a ground out and strikeout, before he ended the game by starting a 1-6-3 double play in the bottom of the seventh.

All nine Allegheny starters recorded at least one hit in the opener, led by two apiece from Shick and Davis.  Brandt earned the complete game victory by going all seven innings and scattering nine hits, while striking out three against just one walk.

In the nightcap, the Gators jumped out to an early 6-0 lead after three innings, and never looked back.  The scoring started in the top of the second, as Zach Gray led off with a double, before scoring on an RBI groundout from Bronson.  Kyle Emerson then walked, moved to second on a balk, and scored the Gators' second run after an RBI single from Davis.

The Gators then took advantage of three Kenyon errors in the top of the third to plate four unearned runs.  Killian opened the frame by reaching on an error, and came around to score on a two-out double by Bronson.  Bronson then came through with a double to score Bronson, who reached on a two-out error, before Davis racked his second RBI single in as many innings to give the Gators the 6-0 lead.

Kenyon got one run back in the bottom of the third, but the Gators closed their scoring for the afternoon with three runs over the fifth and sixth innings.  In the fifth, Davis led off with a bunt base hit, moved to second after Weyant reached on an error, and scored on an RBI single from Killian.  An inning later, Gray doubled and Bronson singled to begin the frame.  Gray scored on a Murray sacrfice fly, putting the Gators in front 8-1, before Bronson crossed the plate after an errant pickoff throw to give the visitors an eight-run lead.

Gray was the offensive star for Allegheny in game two, finishing 4-for-5 with two runs scored, while Davis went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.  Pezzone and Bronson rounded out the 14-hit attack by each going 2-for-5, each scoring a pair of runs.

Brandon Ellis picked up his third straight win on the mound, working the first seven innings and allowing three runs (all unearned) on six hits, with one strikeout and two walks.  Chase Boyer and Mike Pezzone each threw scoreless innings to close out the victory.

The Gators will return to action on Tuesday, hosting 18th-ranked Case Western Reserve in a 1 p.m. doubleheader.  After traveling to Fredonia State for another non-conference tilt on Wednesday, the Gators will wrap up the regular season with a pivotal four-game weekend set at Wooster, with first place in the NCAC's East Division on the line.
