Gators Post Comeback Win over Behrend

Box Score MEADVILLE, Pa. – Sparked by six runs in the seventh inning, the Gators posted their second comeback win over Penn State Behrend this season, logging a 10-4 victory over the Lions on Thursday afternoon at the Robertson Complex.

Freshman Jacob Shick recorded a strong afternoon for the Gators, recording three doubles to finish the game 3-for-5 with three runs, a stolen base while driving in a run, one of six Gators to register hits on the afternoon.  Junior Eric Weyant went 2-for-4 while fellow third year Adam Bronson finished 2-for-3 with a run and RBI.  Sophomore Joe Killian logged a team-high two RBI while freshman Shea Beaumont and sophomore Matt Sardini picked up a hit each.

Junior Paul Vojtek picked up the win for the Gators, hurling 3.2 innings of scoreless work while striking out a pair of batters.  Freshman Zach Hale made the start while fellow first year Corey Marshall pitched an inning of relief in the ninth.

Behrend scored three runs in the top of the third to strike first.  Back-to-Back doubles by Shick and Killian allowed two runs to cross the plate, cutting the Lions' advantage to one run.

After a Penn State Behrend run improved the lead to 4-2 entering the bottom of the fifth, Sardini led off the rally with a single through the left side.  After a sac bunt by Weyant pushed Sardini to second base, Shick doubled down the left field line to continue the inning.  After earning a walk, Killian forced an error by the first baseman to allow Shick to cross the plate for the tying run.

The Allegheny comeback would be completed in the bottom of the seventh, when the Gators scored six runs on three hits and three Penn State Behrend errors.  Weyant led off the inning by singling up the middle before Shick's third double of the game placed runners at second and third with no outs.  Killian was intentionally walked before senior Mike Pezzone reached base on a Lions error, scoring Weyant and giving the Gators their first lead of the game.

Junior Zach Gray forced a bases loaded walk to score the second run of the inning before Bronson sent a single that turned into a three-run error by Penn State Behrend, vaulting the Gators to a 9-4 lead.  Senior Kyle Davis reached first on the third Behrend miscue of the inning, scoring Bronson.  The pairing of Vojtek and Marshall shut the Lions offense out over the final four innings to clinch the win for the Gators.

The Gators will face a quick turnaround after Thursday's win, traveling to Gambier, Ohio to face off against North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) foe Kenyon in a four-game series on Friday, Apr. 18 and Saturday, Apr. 19.
