Complete Game Efforts Lift Gators to NCAC Sweep

Kyle Davis threw a complete game two-hitter in the opener vs. Oberlin
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MEADVILLE, Pa. - The Gators rode a pair of complete game efforts on the mound to sweep Oberlin 5-0 and 6-3 in a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader on Senior Day at the Robertson Athletic Complex.

In the opener, senior Kyle Davis was dominant throughout, allowing just two hits with nine strikeouts for the shutout, while in the nightcap, junior Steven Ramsdell went all nine innings and struck out seven for his fourth win of the year.

The two victories move the Gators to 16-6 overall and 5-1 in the NCAC, while Oberlin falls to 12-10/5-5.

Allegheny got off to a hot start in the opener, jumping out to a 2-0 lead before recording an out in the first inning.  Davis led off with a walk, and moved to second on an Adam Bronson single to center.  Mike Killian followed with a single, plating Davis, before the Gators took advantage of an Oberlin miscue to plate their second run, as Zach Gray lifted a high pop up into shallow left center that was dropped by the shorstop, bringing home Bronson.

After Davis stranded a pair of Yeomen runners in the top of the second, the Gator offense went right back to work.  With one out, Eric Weyant singled, and Davis followed by reaching on a walk for the second straight inning.  Bronson promptly followed with a double to the fence in left center, clearing the bases and giving Allegheny a four-run lead.

The Gators scored their final run of the opener in the bottom of the fifth.  With two outs, Killian walked, and was driven home on a double to left by reigning North Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week Mike Pezzone.

Staked to the early lead, Davis was masterful on the mound.  After allowing a single with two outs in the second, Davis held the Yeomen hitless over the final 4.1 innings, retiring the final 12 batters he faced in order.  He didn't walk a batter in the complete game two-hitter, and faced just three over the minimum in a game that lasted a scant one hour, 28 minutes.

Offensively, the Gators tallied eight hits in the win, with two apiece from Bronson, Weyant, and Pezzone.  Davis also helped his own cause at the plate, walking and scoring twice.

Oberlin starter Harrison Wollman took the loss, working five innings and allowing five runs on six hits, with four strikeouts and three walks.

In the nightcap, the Gator offense again got off to a strong start, as second baseman Jacob Shick put the hosts on the board with a one-out solo homer to left center in the bottom of the first.  The Gators manufactured a run in the bottom of the second to take a 2-0 lead, as Zach Gray led off with a single, stole both second and third, and scored on a wild pitch.

Allegheny added to its lead in the bottom of the fourth, again showcasing its prowess on the base paths.  Pezzone led off with a single, and after swiping both second and third, Gray was hit by a pitch.  Bronson then came through with another RBI single, scoring Pezzone, before Gray scored on a wild pitch.  With two outs, Weyant doubled down the third base line, bringing home Bronson to put the hosts in front 5-0.

The Yeomen answered back to trim the lead in the top of the fifth, scoring three runs on three hits, before the Gators closed out the afternoon's scoring in the bottom half.  Shick was hit by a pitch to lead off, stole second, moved to third on a Killian single, and scored on a Pezzone grounder to make the score 6-3.

Ramsdell shook off the three-run fifth to blank the Yeomen over the final four frames to earn the win.  He worked all nine innings in the win, scattering 10 hits and striking out seven with just one walk.

Oberlin held a 10-8 advantage in hits in the nightcap, but the Gators were aided by their team speed in the win, as the squad tallied nine stolen bases, the second most in program history, following a 10-steal performance in 1997 vs. Baldwin Wallace.  Pezzone and Gray each had three thefts, with Bronson, Shick, and Weyant stealing one bag apiece.  Seven different starters recorded at least one hit for Allegheny, led by Gray's 2-for-3 showing.

Benjamin Whitener started and took the loss for Oberlin, allowing five runs on four hits with two strikeouts in three innings of work.  Ryan Bliss and Mitch Novak each had two hits in the defeat.

The Gators will close out the weekend series with the Yeomen on Sunday, with the 9-inning/7-inning doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
